  1. POSC Special Interest GroupPractical Well Log Standards (PWLS) Norwegian Petroleum Directorate Tuesday June 15 2004 Eric Toogood, Project Manager Diskos

  2. Diskos: The Norwegian National Database for Seismic, Well, and Production Data reports reports reports reports reports reports reports reports • Well Data is a key data type: • Objectives • Overall • To build and maintain a National Digital Library for well data from the Norwegian Continental Shelf - NCS • To serve the needs of the NPD and allow access to entitled oil companies • The Reporting Procedures • Reported data must be structured and named to be compatible with the National Database • The activity of reporting is aligned as closely as possible with the oil companies’ normal business needs • The Reporting Standards • These are set by the database structure. Now HIGHER than previous industry practice

  3. Well Data in Norway - History • The Diskos group of companies has had an ongoing focus on improving access to well data since the late 1990’s • There has been collaboration with POSC on this issue throughout this period • Work performed in Diskos Well Data Work Group in collaboration with: • Petrodata, Flare Consultants, POSC and now Schlumberger (Sinas) • Focus on the clean up and loading of historical (legacy) data • Establish streamlined procedures for handling well data throughout the workflow

  4. The Importance of PWLS in Norway • Quick and efficient loading procedures and efficient retrieval and transfer of well log data is essential to the Diskos initiative • In order to make the standard work we must have commitment from all the stakeholders • Authorities (NPD) • Data base operator (Schlumberger) • Operating Oil companies • + Licence Partners • Service Companies • POSC to develop and manage the standard

  5. Numbers of Curves Business Value Load and Index Index Only Ignore The Aim: Curve level filtering • Data Overload • “Business Value” is concentrated in a relatively small number of data curves - filtered views focus on high value data 50,000+ 'Visible' Acquisition Curves 500+ ‘Useful’ Curves

  6. PWLS Aims • Objectives: • define standards necessary for the creation of an organized, clearly labeled and accessible well-log database • Concentrate on the long-term data storage problems • Build on existing work and standards where possible • Concepts should be equally applicable to both 'Data' and 'Hard Copy'

  7. Business Benefits • Reduced costs or increased efficiency • significantly lower costs to maintain 'load lists' • less time wasted in identifying data for experts and non-experts • faster data preparation and acceptance for exchange/sale • trades, asset/licence swaps and disposals, mergers • Increased Effectiveness • clear data organisation and naming will improve use and maximise value-add potential • Creating value for Oil Companies and the Norwegian State • More efficient exploration and development • More time spent on “useful work” (rather than looking for data) • Improved decisions

  8. Transfer of Data and Operations • At the end of 2002 the contract for the management of the Diskos database was awarded to Schlumberger (2004-2008) • Through 2003 Diskos focused on the transfer of data and operations from Petrodata to Schlumberger • Diskos was not able to give attention to the PWLS initiative • Last PWLS meeting was held in October 2002 • PWLS is again a major priority in Norway • Aims: • - Improved access to data already stored in the Diskos database • - Streamline loading procedures for all new well data

  9. June 2004 meetings (Stavanger/Houston) • Renewed focus on the initiative • POSC must: • Identify the most pressing issues that need to be addressed from • The operator point of view (receipt and loading of data) • The service company point of view • - The end-user point of view (use of the data) • Decide on a list of “Actions” and time scale for deliverables • Coordinate other groups through similar meetings in USA (Houston) • Examine and discuss mechanisms for the maintenance and further development of the standard
