  1. Nuts and Bolts • DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME, CLASS SECTION, OR DATE ON THE TOP OF YOUR PAPER • FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS LISTED ON THE ASSIGNMENT/GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR • CLEARLY LABEL THE SECTIONS OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS • PAY ATTENTION TO THE AMOUNT OF WORDS THAT YOU SHOULD BE USING

  2. Common Grammar Mistakes

  3. Sentence Fragments A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. A sentence fragment is also known as an “incomplete sentence.” A sentence contains a subject and a verb.Danattended the pep rally before the football game.

  4. When a group of words fails to tell us: • Who or what did something (the subject), • What happened (the verb), • Or both (the subject and the verb), We have what is known as a sentence fragment.

  5. Examples: • Sat behind me in science class • We need a subject. • The new girlsat behind me in science class • After the rain stopped • We need a subject and a verb. • After the rain stopped, the childrenran outside to play.

  6. Comma Uses • Between items in a list • Wiley E. Coyote tries to catch the road runner with a sling shot, rocket, and bird seed. • Between 2 independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (and, for, nor, but, so, yet) • Bugs Bunny dressed up like a girl, and Elmer Fudd fell in love with him. • Between an independent and dependent clause • If Daffy duck doesn’t give up soon, he will surely die.

  7. Comma Uses Cont. • After an introductory element • On the other hand, He hasn’t died yet! • Before dialogue • Bugs Bunny likes to say, “What’s up doc?” • A conjunctive adverb may appear within an independent clause. Then, use commas to set off the conjunctive adverb • Tom and Jerry, however, never say anything.

  8. Semicolon Uses • The main use will be between 2 independent clauses that DO NOT have a coordinating conjunction • Kliff Kingsbury is Tech’s new coach; they have been unbeatable with him at their head. • Join elements in a series that already have a comma included • The next football games are October 5, 2013; October 12, 2013; and October 19, 2013. • When connecting an independent clause with a conjunctive adverb, use a semicolon before the adverb and a comma after it • Tech beat TCU; consequently, they became ranked 25.
