  2. What is PBL? • Learning by doing something real (Ostrander) • Personally meaningful (Larimer and Morgendoller) • Problem-solving strategies (Jolly and Jacob)

  3. Why use PBL in composition class? • “It’s very clear that they don’t know how to analyze their sources,” (Howard qtd in Berrett) • Using a scenario for composition class- authentic tasks lead to student learning

  4. Identify a Problem HawaiʻI imports 85-90% of its food food security, the need to make the state self-sufficient, is being addressed at both the state and local levels

  5. Identify a Model:MaʻO Farms in Waiʻanae MAʻO is the acronym for mala ‘ai ‘opio, which translates as ‘the youth food garden’, a movement to develop a comprehensive and living local food system—educating youth, fighting hunger, improving health and nutrition, growing the organic agriculture industry—to empower our community to move towards self-sufficiency (“Farming Values”).

  12. Why Does Wai'anae Farms Need a Marketing Department? We propose that Wai'anae Farms should consider creating a marketing department. Not only will it help to gain new customers, but it will also help Wai'anae Farms get their foot in the door to work with other local businesses and expand the farms revenue.

Why Wave Power • Ocean waves represent our planet's last untapped, natural, renewable energy resource. • Over 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. • The energy contained within waves has the potential to produce up to 80,000TWh of electricity per year • The potential to capture energy from the sea offers a vast and endless source of clean sustainable electricity. • Ocean waves are generated by wind passing over the surface of the sea • computer models of wave propagation allow us to accurately forecast incoming waves up to five days in advance.
