  1. About the Author If you like Kira-Kira… Kira-Kira Cynthia Kadohata was born in Chicago in 1956. Her family moved to Georgia, where her father found a job as a chicken sexer, just like Katie’s father in her book. Cynthia has a BA in journalism from the University of Southern California. She has written a total of 7 books, some for young readers and some for adult readers. Characters Setting Plot • Katie: • Main character • Born in 1951 • Japanese-American • Doesn’t want to grow up • Persevering through family, economical and racial hardships • Lynn (Lynnie): • Katie’s sister, 4 years older • Katie’s best friend • Is sick a lot, often spending weeks at a time in the hospital • Sammy: • Lynn and Katie’s younger brother • Is the first person to ever look up to Katie • Masao: • Katie, Lynn and Sammy’s father • Headstrong • Will do anything for his family • Mr. Lyndon: • Owns all of the chick hatcheries in Chesterfield • Katie’s parents Boss • Richest man in the city, and maybe even the state. The beginning of Kira-Kira takes place in a small town in Iowa… Katie is only 7 years old when her parents move her family from a small town in Iowa to a new town in Georgia. She and her sister are best friends and mean the world to each other. Soon after they move to Georgia though, Lynn gets sick.
