Tryon’s Educational Excellence • Met expected growth on ABC Testing Program for 4th year in a row • Met 13/13 goals and made AMO • Proficiency rate increased for 4th year in a row: 70.2%, 72.4%, 73.6%, 77.5% • School of Progress • Reading Proficiency 69.1% • Math Proficiency 86.3% • Subgroups: All White and ED • Subgroup has been revised to a minimum of 30 students.

  6. Title 1 School • Title 1 Schools eligible for money from the federal government based on percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. • 78% of Tryon students qualify for free and reduced lunch. • Tryon School Title 1 budget $151,000.

  7. Title 1 Information Cont. • All staff are highly qualified as measured by federal standards. • Parents may contact the principal to inquire about staff qualifications.

  8. Title 1 Budget Expenditure • 2 class size reduction teachers • 1 teacher assistant • Computer software • Literacy materials • Instructional supplies • Tutors for grades 3-5

  9. School Day 8:00 am until 2:25 pm Tardy at 8:00 must sign in with parent No early checkout after 2:00 pm

  10. Keeping Our Students Safe is Our #1 Priority • All adults must check in and out using computer in office • Wear the visitor badge so that it can be seen • Ask office to announce your presence if going to the classroom

  11. Safety Practices • Monthly fire drills • Bus evacuation procedures • Tornado drills • Lock down procedures • Campus Evacuation (Bessemer City High School) • Cameras are in use 24 hours • Rachel’s Challenge ( bullying assembly) September 10 September 11 6:30 Starnes Auditorium

  12. Attendance Expectations • Students are expected to be in school every day unless they are running a fever. • 12 days absent is the limit established by the BOE. • Students are expected to be in school all day long (8am-2:25pm). • Written excuses are expected to be turned into teacher.

  13. Student Drop-off and Pick-up • Drop-off /Pick-up located behind school at Cafeteria • Follow directional signs to drop-off/pick-up • Students should NOT arrive before 7:15 • Students will be checked off list when picked up • Students will be asked to identify driver • All students must be checked out through car line • Early check out is through the office computer system

  14. Bus Information • Stops must be .2 mile or more apart. Students will not be delivered door to door. • Be at bus stop 10 minutes ahead of schedule • Be patient as we work out new routes • ALL GCS buses equipped with digital cameras mounted front/back to capture clear picture and sound. • GPS mounted to track bus and time • Students are expected to obey all bus rules and follow directions of driver and monitor. • Parents will be notified by telephone and written note when students are referred to office for misconduct. • Route information is available in the library. Stop by after classroom visit.

  15. Communication • Parent Assistant (computer access) • Use of daily planner grades 1-5 • Thursday white envelope day • Weekly Connect-ed • Monthly newsletters • Parents are welcome to call the principal, Mr. Usery at his residence. (704-922-0133)

Parent Involvement Policy • Parents are encouraged to be involved in child’s education. • PTO Board meets 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 in room 306. • Weekly Connect-ed messages • Student accountability agreement • Annual survey and parent feedback • Published activity calendar • Parents can check with Mrs. Heavner for school supplies.

Volunteer Opportunities • New applicants must register on-line at the Gaston County Schools web-site and be approved and attend orientation. • Approved volunteers from last year must go on-line to reactivate volunteer status. • Go to (www.gastonschoolvolunteers.com) in order to register. • Must click SUBMIT!! Do NOT have to attend orientation. • Persons only wanting to go a fieldtrip with their child and not be responsible for anyone else do not need to go through the volunteer process but must adhere to school policies and regulations • Persons eating lunch with only your child not required to go through process • Criminal background checks are conducted before applicant is approved. • Principal is the final authority for approving applications.

  19. Curriculum Common Core • National • Math • Reading (ELA) Changes in what and how we teach and students learn. NC Essential Standards • State • Social Studies • Science • Technology These will be taught within the reading and math blocks.

Grading Policy Highway Patrol Tips Stepping up patrols in school zones Speeding, seat belts, child safety seats Cost of tickets and court costs have and will increase • Grading policy for students in grades 3 -5 • Each subject carries a minimum number of grades. • Parents can access all student grading and attendance information through parent assistant program on GCS website

  21. Dress Code • Gaston County Schools Code of Student Conduct addresses clothing • We prefer tennis shoes as children must have 30 minutes daily physical activity and could get hurt when wearing flip flops.
