  11. ACES Why would it be difficult for serfs to increase their prosperity (wealth) from one generation to the next (from father to children)? It would be difficult for the serfs to increase their prosperity because when the person died, most of his possessions did not go to his family, but went to the lord or the Church. As the text says, “the lord shall have all the pigs of the deceased, all his goats, …bees, … bacon-pigs, all his cloth of wool and flax, and whatsoever can be found of gold and silver.” The text goes on to explain that if the serf had children, they would only get 1/3 of his other possessions. In addition, the text says that the serf could not sell to anyone except the lord or without his permission. This would make it impossible for a serf to pass on wealth to his children because the lord and Church captured it upon their death. Also, the children could not prosper by selling the possessions that they inherited because they had to sell to the lord or with his permission. As a result, children of serfs were not able to increase their wealth even after their father passed away.
