Takoma Park Primary Magnet SchoolFramework: The rationale and goals that direct the course of studies and instruction
Rationale • All students need instructional programs that are based on their needs as assessed by teacher observations and academic assessments. • Some students need additional enrichment and/or acceleration and time working with their intellectual peers. • Classroom instructional experiences should challenge each student to maximize their potential by building their academic strengths. Promotes the thinking skills and instructional strategies that encourage risk taking and creative expression to help students realize their full potential.

2012-2013 Primary Magnet Reading & Writing Students will be heterogeneously grouped for homeroom based on reading levels • All students have a peer group of similarly able readers • All students participate in Junior Great Books • All second graders participate in The William & Mary Language Arts Program
Junior Great BooksInquiry-based language arts program • Goal: Increase creative thinking about literature through questioning strategies and discussion • Story is read aloud • Vocabulary discussed in context • Questions generated and discussed
Junior Great Books Pullout with Mrs. Weiss Students will meet during a school week for the guided reading block -- one time during each semester. Grade 1 10:00 – 11:00 Grade 2 11:20 – 12:20
Junior Great Books Pullout with Parent Volunteers Parents will be trained to facilitate selected stories from the JGB collection Training Dates To Be Determined in September, 2013.

Selection for participation in the Takoma Park Elementary School (TPES) Primary Magnet Program has been completed. This process included the use of multiple sources of data in order to determine whether the Primary Magnet Program is an appropriate match for each child. A committee of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) staff reviewed the data, and determined that your child _______________ would benefit from the Magnet Program. or A committee of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) staff reviewed the data, and determined that at this time, your child __________ not be selected for participation in the Magnet Program.
An important goal of the Takoma Park Elementary School instructional program is to meet the academic needs of students who have demonstrated strengths in their verbal and non-verbal capacity. Within each homeroom class, there are opportunities for students to work with a community of peers who also demonstrate above grade-level skills and concepts, and/or critical thinking and problem solving skills. Please note that this selection process is not used to formally recognize students as "gifted and talented."
