The Life of Abraham

Genesis 12:1-5

genesis 12 1 5
Genesis 12:1-5

“12 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

4 So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.”

Introduction

Abraham was called the “Father of Faith.” When we consider his life, we will learn something about faith. He really possessed a genuine faith. But before we can see in his latter days, the faith he really displayed, let us consider his early life even from the time when God finally came to his life.

Genesis 11:26-32

“26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

Genesis 11:26-32

30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.”

Acts 7:2

“And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,”

  • God appeared to him in the city of Ur
  • God revealed Himself first to us

Salvation is of the Lord

Jonah 2:9

“But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”

i his conversion4
I. His Conversion
  • It was God’s choosing
  • God chose us, and not

we who first chose God

John 15:16

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”

i his conversion5
I. His Conversion
  • It was God’s choosing

b. God chose us before the foundation of the world

Ephesians 1:4

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:”

i his conversion6
I. His Conversion
  • It was God’s choosing

c. God gave us eternal life.

John 3:27

“John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.”

  • Nothing was originated from us, all things that we have came from the Lord.
i his conversion7
I. His Conversion
  • It was God’s choosing

Ephesians 2:8-9

“8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

2. It was God’s timing

II Corinthians 6:2

“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”

i his conversion9
I. His Conversion

2. It was God’s timing

  • Everything in this world was planned by God.
  • Nothing happens by just an accident.
  • They exist even in the fore knowledge of God.
  • So, our conversion was perfectly God’s appointed time.
i his conversion10
I. His Conversion

2. It was God’s timing

According to Hebrews 2:3 and 3:15-16..

“3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.”

i his conversion11
I. His Conversion

2. It was God’s timing

According to Hebrews 2:3 and 3:15-16..

  • Today is the accepted time.
  • But for each one of us, there is an exactly appointed time for our salvation.
  • There are people you try to bring in the feet of Christ and yet even until now they don’t even manifest or even experience God’s salvation. Maybe because, God’s time for thim had never come yet to thim.

c. Separation to all that is within the will of God

  • The land that God will give to Abraham is a BETTER COUNTRY.

Hebrews 11:8-10, 14-16

ii his calling16
II. His Calling
  • It was a calling of Separation

c. Separation to all that is within the will of God

9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

ii his calling17
II. His Calling
  • It was a calling of Separation

c. Separation to all that is within the will of God

ii his calling20
II. His Calling

2. It was a calling to God’s blessing

  • We need to follow God not because of the blessings but because we really love God.

iii his compliance
III. His Compliance
  • Partial and Reluctant at first

Genesis 11:31

“And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.”

  • He came out but with his relatives. At first, he did not obey God completely.
iii his compliance1
III. His Compliance
  • Partial and Reluctant at first
  • He brought Terah, his father, with him
  • He allowed Terah to initiate to be the leader
  • Terah “took” Abraham
  • Terah means wandering
iii his compliance2
III. His Compliance
  • Partial and Reluctant at first

b. He allowed Terah to initiate to be the leader

  • He followed God fully when his father died at Haran

Genesis 11:32

“And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.”

  • God will take away from us all the things that hinder us for us to follow God completely.
iii his compliance3
III. His Compliance
  • Partial and Reluctant at first

c. He brought Lot with him

(one of the factor of his partial obedience)

  • God wants us to obey Him immediately and completely, so if we are not fully obeying God, let’s ask God to forgive us and be determined to follow Him 100%, in every aspect of our lives.
iii his compliance4
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

Hebrews 11:8

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.”

  • One’s faith is being tested by obeying what God is telling a person to do everything he could not understand or he does not know how to do or where to go.
iii his compliance5
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

  • He knew God personally

Hebrews 11:6

“But without faith it is impossible

to please him: for he that cometh

to God must believe that he is,

and that he is a rewarder of them

that diligently seek him.”

iii his compliance6
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

  • He knew God personally
  • He was sure that it was really God who called him.
  • We can fully follow God when we fully know who God really is.
  • Because the measurement of our obedience is our knowledge about God.
iii his compliance7
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

  • He knew God personally
  • He had deep relationship with God and believe His Word.
  • If you know God, it is easy for

you to believe God’s Word.

  • We can’t obey God when we are short of knowing Him. He was convicted to follow God’s Word.
iii his compliance8
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

  • He knew God personally
  • How much do you know God?

“GOD KNOWS YOU, THEREFORE YOU MUST KNOW YOUR GOD.”

iii his compliance9
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

b. It was by faith, because “he went out not knowing whither he went.”

  • It is not easy to go if

you do not know where to go.

  • Abraham had a complete trust in God that He will guide him all throughout his journey.
iii his compliance10
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

b. It was by faith, because “he went out not knowing whither he went.”

  • When we trust God that

He is capable of leading us,

it is easy to obey Him.

  • God is not just able, but

also willing to guide us.

iii his compliance11
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

Hebrews 11:1, 10

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

iii his compliance12
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

  • We must have a genuine faith to see the unseen and invisible things or even the things God prepared for us in the future.
  • Faith is looking for the things that we have not seen yet.
iii his compliance13
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

  • We must have a spiritual eyes

II Corinthians 4:18, 5:1-7

“18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

iii his compliance14
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

5 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:

iii his compliance15
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

iii his compliance16
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”

iii his compliance17
III. His Compliance

2. By faith

c. It was by faith because he look for a city that was very real to him.

  • The things of heaven and the things that God has promised must be very real to us.
