  1. Geothermal Energy By: Sarah Patchak

  2. What does Geothermal Energy mean? • Geothermal energy is thermal energy from below Earth’s surface. • Geo means earth • Thermal means heat

  3. How Geothermal Energy Works • The heat from Geothermal Energy can come to the surface naturally ( from geysers or hot springs) or by drilling. Engineers can pump cold water into the ground where water does not naturally come to the surface. The water will then get heated by the rock, then pumped back to the surface to be used. The hot water or steam from a geothermal well spins a turbine to make electricity.

  4. Advantages • Geothermal Energy is clean and safe and is renewable since hot rock is found everywhere in the earth. • It doesn’t depend on the sun • Has minimum bad environmental impact • It is also a resource that can be used without any processing! • It could produce 10% of the United States energy by 2050. • Geothermal power plants run day and night with an uptime typically exceeding 95%

  5. Disadvantages • A bad part though is in many parts of the world the hot rock isn’t close enough to the surface for building geothermal power plants. • Expensive • It can run out of steam over periods of time due to drop in temperature • Can not be easily transported

  6. The Cost • Geothermal energy is a source of unlimited cheap energy. Only in a few places it is expensive because magma isn't close to the surface, therefore they have to drill deep wells to tap this energy. Though it can be costly, it is likely to play a part in meeting energy needs in the future.

  7. How its produced • Geothermal energy is produced by using heat from the Earth's core. The Earth's core is hot therefore it creates magma and heats the Earth's crust which is made up of rocks and water. A drilled two miles deep into the Earth's surface then captures the rising hot water and steam.

  8. Places that use Geothermal Energy • Idaho Capital Building • Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehab in Warm Springs • Burgett Geothermal Greenhouses in Cotton City
