  1. Advanced Sensing in Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling InthuornSasanakul, NEES@RPI

  2. Centrifuge Model Setup

  3. Traditional Sensors

  4. Tactile Pressure Sensors • Tactile pressure sensors are a matrix of individual force sensors called sensels • Available in many sizes and shapes • High resolution sensors (1936 sensels, 225 samples per second) • High speed sensors (264 sensels, 1400 samples per second)

  5. Additional layer of lamination applied to sensors for extra protection and durability in high-g environmentSensors calibrated and equilibrated on the centrifuge in a model-specific medium in order to minimize compliance error Tactile Pressure Sensors

  6. Tactile Pressure Sensors

  7. Tactile Pressure Sensors (cont’)

  8. High-Speed Motion Tracking • Vision Research Phantom v5.1 HI-G Camera • 1200 frames per second at 1024x1024 pixel resolution • Up to 95,000 fps at 64x32 pixel resolution • 8GB of non-volatile memory generates 6.67 seconds of video at maximum resolution and frame rate • TEMA motion tracking software tracks targets embedded on the surface of models.

  9. Soil Movement at Different Level

  10. Lateral Spreading Measurement Strain LVDT 7 Laser 2 Note: the ring displacements Shown are for symbolic purposes. The Figure is intended to show the relative Locations of the LVDTs and lasers. 15.8% LVDT 6 7 Laser 1 17.6% Laser 2 LVDT 5 6 26.9% Laser 1 LVDT 4 25.3% 5 LVDT 3 17.0% 4 LVDT 2 8.6% LVDT 1 3 2 1

  11. High-Speed Motion Tracking • Sand movement at the surface level was 1.2 m in the free field (away from the caisson)
