  1. What type of questions are there? • Knowledge and Understanding: • Describe, in detail,….. = up to 3 marks available for each description. These questions could be worth a total of 4 or 6 marks in the exam. • Explain, in detail,…. = up to 4 marks available for each explanation (where you have linked two causes) these questions could be worth 6 or 8 marks in the exam. • Enquiry Skills • Conclusions (8 marks) • Decision-making (10 marks) • Selectivity. (8 marks)

Knowledge and Understanding Questions • Describe ….. • In this question you need to provide ‘descriptions’ of a relevant issue that include specific detail/evidence of the issue. • Explain …… • In this question you need to provide an explanation which gives reasons for the existence of a particular issue.

How much do I need to write? • Describe questions: • Point: In the USA, serious crimes such as murder, rape and robbery will face a severe sentence. • Development 1: In the USA many states have a ‘three strikes’ law which imposes long prison sentences (25 years to life) on offenders who have been convicted three times. • Development 2: In the USA, many states can use the death penalty for murder.

How much should I write? • Explain questions • Reason: Violent crime America can be a result of inequality and poverty. • Explanation: Some ethnic minority groups such as Hispanics and Blacks experience greater levels of poverty, eg,25% of blacks are in poverty and so may go to commit muggings or be involved in drug dealing. • Further development: Groups in poverty are also more likely to live in cheap housing areas called Ghettos like Engelwood in Chicago where drug gangs control territory. If you live in this territory you might be more likely to be involved in gangs for protection.
