And then do the following: • New term is: Direct Democracy • DEFINE THE WORD: Direct Democracy is a form of government in which political decisions are made by the people directly, rather than by their elected representatives. • CONTRAST THE WORD: Direct democracy is opposite of representative democracy because in representative democracy people can only vote for their representatives and the representatives enforce laws and policies • SENTENCE WITH THE WORD: I wish I lived in a country that has direct democracy, at least that way I could have directly voted no to abortions.

  2. Read the text at home. Divide the class in half. Inner group and Outer Group. Inner group discusses while the outer group observes. The outer group gives feedback for 15 minutes. Question: Why do you think that the United States requires registration even though it plays a large role in reducing the voting participation?

Teachers should hand out a short list of words (each group receives a different word list). • The word list should be consisted of a pair of words that do not have the same meaning but at the same time are similar words Example: Pair: Aristocracy-Theocracy: PARAGRAPH: Aristocracy is a form of government in which there are a group of upper class men that make all the decisions for everyone. However, Theocracy is a form of government that does not run on wealth but instead runs on religious percepts. In theocracy there is no separation of church and state.

Partner Re-Tell Activity • purpose: To help students learn from one another to comprehend a text. • Every student in the class should be grouped with a partner • Each group gets a selected reading from the chapter that is to be covered in class • One person in the group reads the selected text and summarize the text to their partner • The other partner just listens and takes notes (at least 6-10 things should be jotted down) • The class comes back together as a whole • In the given reading order, teachers call on the receiving partners to explain 6-10 important things that their partner said about the text.
