Visual Ideas (Refined) By Julia Jin
Themes Discussed in the following slides: Conceptualism Surrealism Escapism By Julia Jin
Concept - The Alter Ego • Escapism - Important to focus on why she goes to party rather than the partying itself. • Dialouge with herself with use of different applied elements to create contrast on screen: • Pop vs Rap • Day vs Night • Blue vs red lighting • White costume vs black costume • Constasting shots to create a deeper sesnes of meaning to the shallow lyrics. • Day wants to avoid her problems by going partying. • Night wants to get a hold of herself from partying and facing her problems. By Julia Jin
Concept: Mark Rothko The illusion of altering the sense of space with use of a painting. Early example of an architectural illusion: Michealangelo’s Laurentian Library, Florence Meaning not create archetechture just for aesthetic purposes but rather to use the space to create an experience By Julia Jin
Set: Mark Rothko Inspired Colourfields painted in a Rothko inspired style: 3-6 different colour fields Key process: Layer on top of layer with different colours of paint to create a muted colour palette in which is the key to create a sense of space altering with a 2D surface. The scale: Important to consider due to the size creates the main impact whole backdrops will be the “painting”. Why I focus on the artistic aspects (if need to be explained), the concept is key to produce an unique and qualitative concent without the need of overcomplicated sets (which I rarely serve the visuals anyways). Rothko’s premature work: better reference to music genre By Julia Jin
Shots/Set: Still Shot Series Against Empty Backdrop Conceptual: • ALL individual series to be simultaneously moving slightly • Shots focusing on facial expression and light movements • Unusual body movements • Empty Backdrop signifies isolation and misunderstanding Puzzle pieces: Create unique sense of perception for the viewer as trying to solve the puzzle pieces of the process. By Julia Jin
Referenced by abstract expressionist artist: Cy TwomblyPieces from the “Just Another Masterpiece” series.Inspired by Twombly’s automatic writing and mark making: Not a representation of anything but rather what is coming from within and the application itself (being honest). Set: The White Backdrop Doodles • Singers/extras mark making (doodling) • Singers can communicate and mark over each other • Doesn’t have to be continuous, cut and put any free outcome to create a storyline and add a deeper sense of meaning By Julia Jin
Theme: Surrealism Reference: René Magritte Surrealism – concept over execution To evoke mystery by challage observers of preconditioned preceptions of reality. Difficult to do, unless well researched and well understood. The connectionto our music video: Potray the idea of feeling disooriented – link back to the reason why she chose to avoid her problems by creating distractions. Possible storyline: Missunderstanding and longing to belong, Feeling judged in her real world, therefore she runs away to her own world in order to feel truly accepted. By Julia Jin
Surrealism - The Rothschild Surrealist Ball, 1972 • One of the greatest masquerade balls of all time with the theme of surrealism. • Unsusual objects to create head pieces and masks • The walking artwork: the induvidual becomes the art itself • Inside her dream-state world – anything is possible By Julia Jin
Examples By Julia Jin By Julia Jin
'Longing for the picturesque at all costs’ – Secret History Fatal flaws: • Oversaturated with society’s ideologies and the idea of who you are supposed to be • Longing to belong – contradiction – with the ideal self • Having everything and nothing at once The Hero in the storyline but the Underdog in society • Capitalising on authenticity • Wants to be freed from the self By Julia Jin
Set: The Maze • Reference: Richard Sierra • “I keep running but runs into myself” • The Maze = Her Mind • The idea of a maze is more compelling than a maze itself: • With use of two mirrors to visualise infinity • To create a feeling of being trapped: claustrophobic spaces with cardboard, opening door after door leading to nothing By Julia Jin
Graphic Match Cuts To create visual metaphors and seamless passage of time • Intimacy • To reveal the ”third person” within the picture • Organic shapes – nature to human – the idea of beauty Reference: Katrien De Blauwer “emphasizing the impossibility to identify with a single individual, yet allowing to recognize oneself in the story” By Julia Jin
Androgyny – Masculine ou feminine ? Reference: Tom Ford for Gucci, 1996 Unconventional to genre = another questionmark? • Dressing women like men • Reversed sexism • Laura Mulvey Theory (Maybe) Constast the two different alter ego personas: Dress ”day” as a conventional female Dress “night” with androgyny By Julia Jin
