  4. Graduation requirements: • 30 credits (18 Compulsory + 12 Options) • 40 hours of Community Involvement • Literacy Test (March 27th, morning) • Grade 11 and 12 students who did not write last year, or were unsuccessful. Same for students at all levels.

  5. “A Contract is a Contract” has never been more true.

  6. Cooperative education is a wonderful opportunity for students to better understand themselves and the world of work. • Fits most students’ schedules in Grade 11 and many for grade 12 (depending on pathway).

  7. Please hand in on February 18th, 2014 • Teacher recommendations are requested • 2-D teachers

  8. Grade 9  10 • All students take 8 classes (min) • 5 Compulsory and 3 Electives (options) • Academic students must be aware of prerequisites • IB students should look at future goals in IB • Cross Border Transfer (CBT) students are required to take courses for which their transfer was accepted (Spanish) • Continue submitting Community Involvement hours to Guidance dept. • Take Careers class seriously!

  9. Grade 10 11 • Now it’s your turn! • Take 2 compulsory courses and 6 Electives • Math and English are required. • All other courses will aim to complete prerequisites for college or university or help in balancing a student’s life

  12. Grade 11 12 • Teenagers change over summer! • Revisit choices

IB (Grade 10 11) • University requirements don’t change for IB students. • IB students must take one course in each of the 6 IB disciplines as well as Theory of Knowledge (HZT4UE). • With exception of Math Studies, and ITGS, all courses must be taken for 2 years. • 8th course is an opportunity to add balance.

A quick note for IB • Grade 11 and 12 English (Language and Literature) • Language Acquisition (Spanish or French) • Individuals and Society (Geography or History or ITGS) • Science (Bio. or Chem. or Phys. or Sports, Exercise and Health Science) • Mathematics (Studies SL. or Math SL. or Math HL) • Arts or electives (Music or V. Arts or a second group 2-3-4) PLUS TOK in grade 11

  15. IB (Grade 11 12) • Continue with IB year 2 courses. • Add courses of interest and balance. • Review university requirements. • No extra bonus for extra courses. • See guidance counselor to discuss move to academic program. Timing is important.

  16. College • All programs need OSSD • 30 credits • ENG3C • Some will want SBI3C and SCH4C • Some will want MAP4C or MBF3C • Prerequisites will make determination for acceptance • Many collaborative degree opportunities and innovative programs

Includes a bundle of major and other required credits Certification and in-depth training in a chosen employment sector Taken in grade 11 and grade 12 Apprenticeship, College, University, and Workplace pathways available Successful completion leads to a Red Seal on the OSSD plus a program record transcript

  22. Digital Media and Production Colonel By offers a highly acclaimed broadcast, film, and journalism program in the heart of the nation’s capital. Included under this umbrella has been Cougarvision – Colonel By’s award winning digital television station (the first of its kind in Canada). Students in the CougarVision program use the latest industry standard hardware and software to produce a daily newsmagazine show CougarVision students complete special projects and have been hired by numerous companies, businesses, and organizations including CGI, The World Food Bank, and Cinesphere providing them with real-world experiential learning at its best.

Digital Media and Production Four pathways lead to the Red Seal on the OSSD – an indicator of specialization to post-secondary destinations (Workplace, Apprenticeship, College, University) A key feature of the SHSM are the enhanced experiences for our students in all four pathways to participate in career related opportunities, cooperative education placements, reach ahead experiences, and facilitate students' informed, educated decisions regarding their career options in post-secondary destinations.

  24. SHSM Required Components Bundle of 8 - 10 Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits: • 4 Major credits • 2 Co-operative Education Credits • Other Required elements • Reach Ahead experiences • Sector Specific training/qualifications • WHIMS, CPR/First Aid

  26. How Do I Select the SHSM? A supplementary option sheet is required Students identify their pathway (Workplace, Apprenticeship, College, University) Students select key courses that fulfill requirements of the SHSM, these courses can be from any of the pathways Work with Guidance to ensure all components are completed Options include cooperative education via Summer School Students complete additional program requirements (specializations) and reach ahead opportunities

  27. Summer school • May 1st registration • Reach ahead and Make up • July 3 to 31 (tentative dates) • Mostly compulsory courses with some electives • Registration in May (RA) and June (MU) • Students will register changes to course request with guidance

  28. Course changes • Class size is stipulated by regulation; we cannot add extra students. • Priority is given to compulsory credits/ graduation requirements. • Classes may be limited. • Make sure of your choices.

  29. Students will succeed if they are in a program which promotes success. • Set realistic goals. • Personal excellence is the goal (perfectionism is not attainable). • High school is about developing transferable skills which will make you successful at college and university. • BALANCE IS KEY.
