  1. The Ugly Vegetables Fruits versus Vegetables A vegetable is: a plant cultivated for an edible part, such as the root of the beet, the leaf of spinach, or the flower buds of broccoli or cauliflower or the edible part of such a plant or a member of the vegetable kingdom- a plant. A fruit is developed from a part in the base of the flower (in a plant) and contain the seeds of the plant. The confusion comes from cooking. Things called fruits are usually used for sweets. Vegetables are considered things that aren’t used as sweets. Scientists say that fruits are: blueberries and other berries, bananas, tomatoes, nuts, and some bean pods. The argument over what to call tomatoes actually went to our Supreme Court. They ruled that tomatoes are called vegetables in stores, but let scientists still call them fruits. What would I say? I’d say you should ask your mom or dad. Since they probably do the cooking, call them whatever they want. Then they’ll still give you some good grub.
