  5. Demographics 1 in 5 have had no schooling 80% have a 9th grade education or lower. 10% have had some post-secondary education. One person, 27, from a male-only massage establishment had completed college.

  6. Demographics Age Range: 15-35 Mean Age: 21.92 80.39% of respondents fall within UNICEF's definition of youth (15-24 years)

  7. Entrance into the Industry 21% began sex work before the age of 18 45% began sex work before the age of 20 All but 5 (or 90%) began before the age of 24 (UN Definition of Youth)

Entrance into the Industry • 70% report sending earnings to support family members. • 81% of those who said they "needed money" are sending money home to their family. • 67% of those who said "no other options" are sending money home to their family. • 22% of respondents a helping to pay family debts

  10. Financial Implications Monthly Income from Sex Work (Calculated • Male Massage-- ฿13,927.28 • KTV Bar---- ฿14,880 • Showbar---- ฿13,533.32 • Freelance Bar----฿5,800 *For 88%, sex work is their only source of income. *1 in 3 respondents would accept alternative work paying 6000THB/month

  11. “I send 5,000THB/month to family. Our financial situation is not good because my Dad is sick and I have to take care of him.” “[I’m] taking care of parents, younger brother and younger sister.” “I have to cover all of my parents expenses because they aren't able to work.”

  12. Discrimination 80.5% report negative personal feelings associated with their work. • Nearly half indicate feeling ashamed (48.78%) • More than one-third indicate having low self-esteem. (36.59%) • Nearly one-third indicate feeling guilt. (31.71%)

  14. Sexual History • Range: 9-22 years old • 21% of Cases qualify as statutory rape • Two respondents indicate that their first sexual experience was rape. The perpetrator in both instances was female.

  16. Sex Work Respondents were asked to identify as one of the following categories: • A man who likes to have sex with men. • A man who likes to have sex with women • A man who likes to have sex with both genders

  17. “I don't like the guy customers because I feel like I shouldn't be doing it and is against who I am.” “It is against my values and I don't want to do it, but I have to because I need money.”

Sex Work The number of clients met for sex in the past week ranged from 0 to 8 clients. • 53.85% of respondents had a client for sex in the past week • 15.38% of respondents had 5 or more clients requiring sex *29% clients have been filmed or photographed for porn *51.69% of clients were perceived to be foreign.

  20. Violence and Sexual Abuse 1 in 4 respondents have been forced to have sex against their wishes (by clients) *72% of which from bar based sex work 60% of respondents have experienced unwanted sexual touching in the past 12 months *32% of respondents experience “often” or “always”

  21. Sex Ed and Services • 96% of respondents report having used a condom in the past • 68% of respondents report using a condom in the past week

  22. Condom Usage *87% of respondents mentioning intercourse with one client in the past week also used a condom in the past week. (n=30)

  23. Sexual Health • 33% of respondents know someone with HIV • 0% of respondents who have tested for HIV tested positive for HIV.

  27. Where are you in 2 years? “Other”: get ID card, own a house, study abroad, save money. “I see myself not working at the bar [with a] better life.” “I hope that it is better for myself, my family, and my finances.” “I want to try to be a carpenter.”

  28. “My biggest obstacle is the need of money for my family.” • 22% of respondents state that sending money home/ supporting their family is their biggest obstacle. • 25% of respondents state that personal financial problems are the biggest obstacle currently faced. “[I’m] afraid that [I] won't be able to pay for all of my siblings’ education.” “My room has to be paid and my girlfriend is pregnant and I'm not ready.” -17 year old freelancer
