  1. Advent The name Advent comes from the Latin words, advenire (to come to) and adventus (an arrival), and refers to Christ's coming into this world. It is that period of the year during which the Church requires the faithful to prepare for the celebration of the feast of Christmas, the anniversary of the Birth and coming of Jesus Christ. The mystery of Christmas requires that we prepare by works of penance and prayer. Each Sunday in Advent has a theme to be pondered on during the season. The four themes (traditionally) are: God's people – the Advent hope; the Old Testament prophets; John the Baptist and Mary the mother of Jesus.

  2. Advent Our key learning points for this unit are: Year R: Introduces Advent as a special time when we get ready for the birth of Jesus. Year 1: Looks at getting ready for the birth of Jesus through the eyes of Mary and Joseph and helps to identify their response to God. Year 2: Looks at the symbolism to help us get ready to meet Jesus. Year 3: Explores Advent as a time when we prepare for Christmas and recognise Jesus in the world. It looks at the story of the Annunciation. Year 4: The First Coming of Jesus is placed in historical context though the lives of his ancestors (House of David).Explores the nature of the Messiah. Year 5: Connects the coming of Jesus with the promise revealed in the Old Testament and looks at the titles that were given to the expected Messiah in the Old Testament. Year 6: Examines the two parts of the season of Advent through parables, prayers and hymns of the Church.
