  1. Are Residence Hall Windows Safe?

  2. 18 Year old Alexandra Pew was playing catch with friends in a study lounge on the sixth floor of North Case Hall at Michigan State University around 3:00 AM on Sunday, March 25, 2012

  3. Pew fell through the window, falling six stories to the ground. She survived the ordeal, making a full recovery. After the incident, students had plenty to say about the fall.

  4. Student reactions to the fall • “I thank God that she made it through that accident alive.Nobody deserves to go that young.”-Heather Hoffmeyer, Sophomore Journalism Major • “I hadn’t heard anything that night or any sirens at all. I was already asleep. I had read people’s comments on Facebook the next day and I got really freaked out.”-Chloe Loftis, Freshman Political Science Major

  5. The window Pew fell from According to a State News Report, the MSU Physical Plant inspected the structure of the window and said it was safe. However, questions are still raised in the minds of at least two MSU Students

  6. “I started to wonder if it was smart to get in and out of bed on my ladder, which is right by the window, when the window is open.”-Loftis • Loftis’ window broke after the ladder for her bunk was accidentally knocked into it • “I had assumed this type of situation was impossible. I won’t be fooling around near them.”-Marianne Caddy, MSU Freshman Social Work Major

  7. But not all students questioned the safety of the windows… • Questions were not raised in Hoffmeyer’s mind about the safety of the windows. However, she said it was good to be cautious. • “I guess I could chalk it up as a freak accident. People can be so comfortable in a place, like a dorm. Sometimes you just have to reevaluate the situation.”
