  3. What You Will Learn Learning Target Essential Question How does your way of thinking differ from your classmates? • I can identify several ways of thinking. • I can listen and respond to a classmates point of view • I can define flexible thinking

  4. Definition • What does it mean to think flexibly? • To be adaptable, open to change. • To see things from more than one than one perspective. • To be open minded.

  5. Four Thinking Styles • Egocentric • Allocentric • Macrocentric • Microcentric

  6. Egocentrism • Seeing all things from your own point of view. • Your point of view is the only right point of view. • Give some examples of being egocentric.

  7. Allocentrism • Able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes (empathy) • Highly influenced by other people. • Other peoples opinions determine how you feel? • Give me some examples of Allocentrism.

  8. Macrocentric • Able to see the big picture. • Problem solver • See both sides of an issue • Give me some examples of being Macrocentric.

  9. Microcentric • See one problem at a time. • Logical • Detail oriented • Does not see big picture. • Give me some examples of being Microcentric.

  10. Results: Thumbs up if this is you: • Egocentrism: Seeing only your point of view. • Allocentrism: Influenced by others opinions. • Macrocentric: Able to see the big picture • Microcentric: Take one problem at a time. Logical.

  11. How Can You Use This? • We are about to have some discussion time. As you listen and respond try the following: • As a person responds listen to determine their thinking style. This will help you understand where they are coming from more. • Try responding with a different style than your own, see if this changes how you feel on a subject. Does it change how people respond to you?

So let’s discuss Expectations Today’s Points All points are from participation. 2 points are available for being a good active listener. 2 points are available for participating in the discussion. • Be Respectful • Don’t interrupt • Respect other’s opinions • Raise your hand • Keep an open mind • Let 3 people talk before you talk again.

  14. Second discussion Topic • Should animals be used for medical research? Why or why not? • What about baby embryos (an unborn human baby? Why or why not?

  15. Third Discussion Question • Should students be allowed to grade their teachers? Why do you feel this way? • What should be done once those those grades are received?

  16. Closing Questions • How does your way of thinking differ from your classmates? • What are some qualities of other ways of thinking that you think would be helpful in a social setting?
