  1. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Sabrina, Domonique, Michelle

  2. Hodgkin’s disease, now known as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is cancer of the lymphatic system. • In this cancer the cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally spreading outside the lymph system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. • It was named after Thomas Hodgkin, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School, who was the first to describe abnormities in the lymphatic system What is it?

  3. Classical Hodgkin's lymphoma- The more common type of the disease, people with this from of the cancer have abnormally large Reed-Sternberg cells in their lymph nodes. • Lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma- The rarer type of the cancer that involve abnormally large cells called popcorn cells due to their appearance. Types of Hodgkin’s

  4. Age- Hodgkin’s lymphoma is commonly diagnosed between the ages 15-35 or 55 and older • Family History- Anyone who has siblings with this disease is at a higher risk • Sex- Males are slightly more likely to get this disease • Epstein-Barr virus- People who had this virus are more likely to get this disease • Weakened Immune System people, who have a weakened immune system from HIV or having an organ transplant, are more likely to get this disease Risk Factors

  5. It is not clear what causes Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Most doctors think it is caused when a B cell, infection fighting cell, develops a mutation in its DNA. • This mutation produces larger B cells that crowd other healthy cells in the lymph system Causes

  6. Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin • Persistent fatigue • Fever and chills • Night Sweats • Loss of appetite • Itching • Trouble breathing Symptoms

  7. Treating of Hodgkin’s lymphoma depend on your type and the stage of the disease. Some forms of treatment are: • Chemotherapy- a drug treatment that uses chemicals to kill lymphoma cells • Radiation- high energy beams are used to kill the cancer cells, in Hodgkin’s lymphoma the beams are aimed at the lymph nodes. • Stem cell transplant- a treatment that replaces diseased bone marrow, with healthy stem cells to grow new bone marrow Treatment

  8. Hodgkin’s disease cannot be prevented Prevention

  9. There is no exact cure for Hodgkin’s disease, but the treatments give you a higher chance of surviving and beating the cancer. Cure
