  4. IAAP CERTIFICATION Program • One professional rating, with areas of specialty • Base rating will be the Certified Administrative Professional, or CAP • Specialties in Organizational Management (OM) and Technology Applications (TA)

  5. CAP program • Tests admins on keys areas of their profession • IAAP’s one professional rating • One-half day examination, covering eight areas • Offered first Saturday every May and November

  6. Qualifications • Four years experience with a high school diploma • Three years experience with Associate degree • Two years experience with Bachelor’s degree

  7. EXPERIENCE requirements • Must meet IAAP’s definition of an Administrative Professional • Verified by current or past employers • Must have held position at least two continuous months • Within last 5 years, must have been with one employer for 12 continuous months • All experience must have been attained within the last 15 years

  8. Administrative Professional • “Individuals who are responsible for administrative tasks and coordination of information in support of an office-related environment and who are dedicated to furthering their personal and professional growth in the chosen profession.”

  9. CAP examination 4-½ hour exam; 350-375 multiple-choice questions

  10. CAP examination Communication 18% • General knowledge of management/theories • Correspondence, documents and reports • Grammar • Customer service • Networking • Team dynamics • Policies and procedures • Confidentiality, ethics and legality

  11. CAP examination Organization and Planning 16% • General knowledge of management/theories • Meeting and travel preparation (including virtual and e-vents) • Time management • Data compilation

  12. CAP examination Information Distribution 14% • Electronic and traditional processes • Research • Security, ethics and legality

  13. CAP examination Records Management 14% • Electronic and manual file management and systems • Filing rules and standards • Security and confidentiality of records • File retrieval, retention, transfer and maintenance

CAP examination Physical and Information Resources 13% • Purchasing decisions • Maintaining inventory of supplies, forms and software • Software and equipment training, usage • Installation & maintenance of equipment/software • Troubleshoot software and hardware problems • Office layout • Basic computer operating and system commands • Transfer data using various media sources • Convert documents from one software to another • Performance of backup and security functions

  23. Technology Applications Specialty • Must hold active CAP rating • Attained through Options Technology Training & Microsoft Certification • Training and certification completed in past two years • IAAP members pay $75 • Nonmembers pay $100

Special circumstances • Organizational Management is a specialty examination; not a professional rating • Can apply for the OM specialty if you hold an active CAP rating • Can apply for the CAP exam and OM specialty at the same time • To earn the CAP rating with OM specialty, both exams must be passed
