  4. Purpose • General lighting – background or ambient lighting. Produces enough light to see everything in the room • Task lighting – focuses light on an area where it is most needed for a specific task • Accent lighting – create a dramatic effect

  5. Sources of light • Natural light – sunlight through windows or doors • Artificial light – lamps & light fixtures • Incandescent - warm & flattering • Fluorescent – produce more light; last longer; blueish cast • Halogen – more efficient; whiter & more intense light; become very hot • Fiber optics – rope lighting; use for displays • LED’s – Light emitting diode; lasts 10 times as long as fluorescent bulbs

  6. Types of Lighting Fixtures • Structural Lighting • Permenant • Valance lighing • Luminous ceiling panels • Cove lighting • Soffit lighting • Strip lights • Downlights • Wall washers • Cornice lighting

  7. Nonstructural Lighting • Fixtures that can be moved or replaced • Ceiling and wall fixtures for general lighting • Track lighting – series of cans attached to a strip mounted at the ceiling; used for accent lighting • Lamps – used for direct, indirect, and task lighting

  8. Decorating with Light • The purpose determines how much light is needed • Combine structural and nonstructural lighting • Downlighting – ceiling fixture is most common • Uplighting – light reflected off the ceiling; enhance the height of the room • Wall-washing – makes a space seem wider

  9. Room by Room • Entryway, Hallways, & Stairs • Engaging and welcoming • Pendant light • Lamps • Cove or bracket • Accent lighting • Safety • Light stairs at top & bottom • Hallways every 8 to 10 ft.

  10. Living Room & Family Room • General lighting for entertaining or TV viewing • Dimmer controls • Task lighting for reading or work • Lamps • Place over right or left shoulder • Bottom of shade at eye level

  14. Bathroom • Safety is main concern • Ceiling fixture • Recessed downlights • Strip lights around mirror avoids shadows

  15. Lighting Controls • Switches • Dimmers • Programmable switches • Timers

  16. Saving Energy • Do not leave lights on in unused rooms • Replace inefficient incandescent bulbs • Occupancy sensors – motion sensors • Fluorescents last 10 times longer than incandescent • Use LED bulbs
