  5. John Wycliffe – late 1300s Views: • Called for Church reform • Indulgences • Immoral behavior • Bible had more authority than the Church leaders • Questioned the Pope’sauthority

  6. John Wycliffe Actions: • First to translate the Bible from Latin into a vernacular language (English) Wycliffe was called … “The Morning Star of Reformation”

  7. Think about it … Why did Wycliffe’s ideas did not spread like Luther’s?

  8. Jan Huss – Early 1400s Views: • Criticized wealth of the church • Said the true head of the church was Jesus Christ • Called for an end to corruption • Wanted the Bible and mass in vernacular

  9. Jan Huss – Early 1400s Actions: • Preached in the vernacular (language of the people) not in Latin! • Arrested, charged with heresy and burned at the stake in 1415

  10. Martin Luther Views: • Faith saves people not good works • Bible is the ultimate authority • God sees all humans as equals • Actions: • - 95 Theses in 1517 • - BIRTH of the Protestant Church

  11. John Calvin - 1509-1564 Views: • Predestination - God chooses who goes to heaven • You don’t get there by good works • Our moral lives reveal if we’re chosen by God • Strict work ethic that honors God

  13. John Calvin Actions: • He broke from Catholic Church & formed Calvinist Church • Expanded Protestant Movement • Calvin’s ideas spread to Scotland & then to North America

  15. Henry VIII 1491-1547 Views: • Didn’t follow the authority of the Pope in Rome • He wanted a divorce! • He didn’t want to share power & wealth with the church
