  1. James 1:14-15 James - Flowchart spritual life

  2. Objective Temptation Volition (choice) Subjective temptation Old sin nature desires to respond positively Sin: death Fellowship: life Sin nature New nature

  3. Immoral degeneracy Moral degeneracy

  4. Trends of the sin nature • The Sin Nature has a system of trends, or inclinations, which vary among individuals. Some people have an inclination toward immorality, lasciviousness, and antinomianism – without strong moral guidelines (Rom. 7:14-23; Mark 7:21-23). This pattern leads to immoral degeneracy, that is, a person lives with few or no moral absolutes, or rules of right conduct, in reference to their own behavior. James - Flowchart spritual life

  5. Definition of LICENTIOUS • 1: lacking legal or moral restraints; especially: disregarding sexual restraints • 2: marked by disregard for strict rules of correctness • licentiouslyadverb • licentiousnessnoun • Since there is no real absolute moral truth means there is no real accountability Revelation

  6. Trends of the sin nature • Others have trends toward morality or asceticism - legalism. This is the area of the production of human good. Colossians 2:20-23. “Human good is evil disguised as goodness produced by a believer under the control of the sin nature and residing in the cosmic system” (Thieme). • This is moral degeneracy - this is rejected by God Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10, 12 James - Flowchart spritual life

  7. Moral degeneracy • This is self-righteousness and legalism. Such people will often appear as very “spiritual” and as excellent, moral Christians: For example, see 2 Corinthians 11:13. • Jesus spoke of the Pharisees as being very “good” on the outside but impure and dirty on the inside – Matthew 23:25-28. In legalism man gets the credit for doing or being “good.” James - Flowchart spritual life

  8. AREA OF WEAKNESS • The “area” of the sin nature that tempts the believer to sin is his area of weakness. Every believer has an area of weakness that continually tempts him. However, temptation becomes sin only when the believer’s volition give in to the temptation. • The "area" of weakness directs the production of all personal sin: Hebrews 12:1; Galatians 5:19-21. Three types of personal sin are produced here: mental attitude sins, sins of the tongue, and open overt sinful behavior.

  9. AREA OF STRENGTH • The area of strength is that part of the old sin nature that generates human good or dead works. Every member of the human race possesses an area of strength, yet God forbids its function in the believer. • Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10, 12, 8:8 James - Flowchart spritual life
