  1. Microscope Care and Use 1. Always carry the microscope by holding the arm of the microscope with one hand and supporting the base with the other hand 2. Place the microscope on a flat surface. The arm should be positioned toward you 3. Look through the eyepieces. Adjust the diaphragm so that light comes through the opening in the stage

  2. 4. Place a slide on the stage so that the specimen is in the field of view. Hold it firmly in place by using the stage clips 5. Always focus first with the coarse adjustment and the low-power objective. Once the object is in focus on low power, the high-power objective can be used. Use ONLY the fine adjustment to focus the high-power lens. 6. Store the microscope covered.

  4. Other Lab Equipment • Beakers • Test tubes • Flask What does all this equipment measure In the (video) SI system? Volume in liters.

  5. Section 1.2 Summary – pages 11-18 Using tools • Biologists use a variety of tools to obtain information in an investigation. • Common tools include beakers, test tubes, hot plates, Petri dishes, thermometers, balances, metric rulers, and graduated cylinders.

  6. What does this equipment measure In the SI system? • Graduated cylinder: • Thermometer: Volume in liters. What does this equipment measure In the SI system? Temperature in Celsius.

  7. Bunsen burner: • Triple beam balance: What does all this equipment measure In the SI system? Mass in grams

  8. Section 1.2 Summary – pages 11-18 Using tools • More complex tools include: • Microscopes • Centrifuges, • Radiation detectors • Spectrophotometers • DNA analyzers • gas chromatographs

  9. What does the following measure? What are the SI units? volume Liters, milliliters What tool would one use to measure the volume of an ? Beaker of water, measure before and after, difference is volume of eraser.

  10. What is another tool used to measure volume? Graduated cylinder Flask

  11. What is this tool called? Petri dish What is the medium found in the Petri Dish? Agar What is grown on the agar? Bacteria Colonies

  12. What would one use to measure the mass of keys ? Triple beam balance What are the SI units used ? Kilograms or grams

  13. What would one use to measure the length of your ? What units are used to measure length using SI? Meter

  14. Safety Symbols It is the responsibility of persons conducting scientific investigations to minimize hazards to themselves and others working around them. Safety symbols warn of any dangers that may exist. Sharp Object Safety This symbol appears when a danger of cuts or punctures caused by the use of sharp objects exists. Clothing Protection Safety This symbol appears when substances used could stain or burn clothing. Eye Safety This symbol appears when a danger to the eyes exists. Safety goggles should be worn when this symbol appears. Chemical Safety This symbol appears when chemicals used can cause burns or are poisonous if absorbed through the skin. Chapter Assessment
