  1. Once Was Lost Sara Zarr Published: October 1, 2009 Alexis R. 2nd period fantasticfiction.co.uk

  2. Setting • This story is taken place in the small town of Pineview. It takes place in the present day. Its important to the story because you would never expect a little girl to be kidnapped in this “friendly” town.

  3. Characters • Samara Taylor- pastors daughter, brunette, looks like her mom. She is responsible because she can take care of herself. She is independent because she doesn’t need her father anymore. And she is optimistic because she believed Jody would return. • Jody Shaw- reddish brown hair, missing, 13 years old. She is amusing because she entertains people. She is sensitivebecause she cried when her brother called her a whiner. And she is socialable because she enjoys talking to people.

  4. Conflict • Jody Shaw is kidnapped from Petey’s Ice Cream Shop. She was wearing an orange shirt with blue shorts. This story is Man vs Society because it is against the law to kidnap someone and this person has disobeyed.

  5. Summary of Plot • Jody Shaw goes missing. They send out searches and she is still not found. Samara has a breakdown and jumps out of Nick Shaw’s truck, Jody’s brother. The police take Nick into questioning again assuming he had something to do with her disappearance. Laura, Samara’s mom, agrees to have brunch with her family. How will this story end?

  6. Theme If you are lost, someone will find you • Jody was lost pg.34 • Samara was finding out who she should be pg.59 • In the end, Jody was found, and so was Samara. Pg. 208 & 217

  7. Point of View This book is told in First Person. It helps the reader understand Samara Taylor’s life and her perspective on it. The story would be different if the author chose another point of view because then you wouldn’t really know Samara and how she’s important.

  8. Symbolism The symbolism in this story is the fan in Samara’s room. Once it breaks, she feels that the whole town of Pineview is shivering, wilting, and falling apart. Just like her fan.

  9. Recommendation This book is worth reading. It was really good and if your parents are having problems, alcohol or drug related, it might help you figure things out and realize that its going to be okay. Or if there is something devastating going on in your town it will give you hope.
