  1. DELIGHTFUL DOLPHINS • Dolphins are beautiful mammals of the ocean. They are very interesting creatures to study and you will learn several amazing facts about these delightful creatures.

  2. DOLPHIN FEATURES • One feature that a dolphin has is smooth, rubbery skin. Another feature a dolphin has is a blowhole. This is a hole on top of its head and is used for breathing. A dolphin also has flippers, a fin and a tail.

  3. DOLPHIN CHARACTERISTICS • Dolphins are very friendly and playful. They like to swim fast in the ocean. They like to play tag and dance on their tails across the water’s surface. They also like to ride the waves made by motorboats.

  4. DOLPHIN NUTRITION • Dolphins eat fish. A dolphin can find fish in the ocean even if it’s dark. They use echolocation. Echolocation is a method by which a dolphin sends out sound waves which hit an object, such as fish or a rock, and then an echo bounces back letting the dolphin know what the object is.

  5. DOLPHIN SOUNDS • Dolphins make lots of sounds. Some sounds are for communication.Every dolphin makes a special whistle sound. If a baby dolphin strays, its mother gives her special whistle and the baby whistles back and then they find each other. Dolphins also make loud clapping noises with their jaws. This happens when dolphins get angry. They also slap the water hard with their tails.

  6. DOLPHIN BUDDY SYSTEM • Dolphins swim in large groups called pods. Within these groups, dolphins look after one another. When danger approaches, they send signals. If a member of the group is injured or in distress, they will push it to the surface so it can breathe. If a shark comes by, the dolphin circles around it to scare it away. If that technique doesn’t work the dolphins will fight.

  7. DOLPHINS TO THE RESCUE • Dolphins are very helpful to people. Dolphins have saved people from death. They have pushed people away from sharks, shoved them onto shore when they were drowning and even kept their boats from sinking. Dolphins are also helpful to fishermen. The dolphins chase the fish into the fisherman’s net and many fish are caught.

  8. DOLPHIN TRAINING • Dolphins can be trained to perform various tasks. Dolphins are trained by hand signals. Trainers use hand signals to communicate with dolphins. They can be trained to jump out of water and do flips in the air. Dolphins can fetch for balls, frisbees, or rings by following signals.

  9. DOLPHIN VARIETY • There are many different kinds of dolphins. Some types are common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, hourglass dolphins, dusky dolphins and amazon river dolphins. These dolphins have their own unique features. They all are beautiful mammals of the sea.
