What is social engineering? • Social engineering also known as “hacking”, is when a person obtains personal information from you by manipulation. It is harmful and can cause you harm such as identity theft, credit card hacking, and much more. Heather Keaton
How do hackers get in? • Phone: A hacker will pretend to be someone from a well-known company to obtain your personal information. • Trash: You would never think someone would go through your garbage, but they do. They are looking for credit card information, and your name, your address, your phone number. • Online sweepstakes: Hackers will send out an email saying you won something and just need to fill out the form attached, NEVER do this. Ways to protect yourself • Make sure you have a strong password such as a mixture of numbers, letters, and symbols. Example: h3@+h3r28 • Be careful what you click on when online and never download or open a link, even if you know the sender. • Install software security such as McAfee, Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc. Heather Keaton
Conclusion • If you are ever unsure of something go with your gut instinct, if it’s too good to be true it usually is. • Never give your personal information out. • Watch what you click on, if you ever see a pop-up that says security certificate error, immediately close the window and browser, then re-open on a secure network.
