  2. Introduction • This workshop is aimed at both PPG members and members of other groups to give an insight into PPGs and for the group to develop their thoughts about setting up and running a PPG. • The workshop will be split up into sections as shown in the following slides

  3. Getting Started • What is a PPG? • What do we want the PPG to do? • Who do we want to join it? • The key initial appointments • Producing a Constitution • Task: Consider the role of the PPG, what its overall ambition should be and what advice would you give a PPG as it develops towards being a self-supporting body?

  4. The Role of the Surgery • The role surgery in setting up the PPG • When should patients assume control of the PPG? • What ongoing involvement is expected from the surgery? • Task: Determine the relationship between the practice and its PPG, the scope of any interaction and how it should be managed

  5. Funds • Does a PPG need its own funds? • Separation of PPG funds from Surgery funds. • Accounting for PPG funds, inclusion in Constitution • Registration as a Charity • Task: Should all PPGs funds, what for, and how should they be managed? Consideration of the need to register for charitable status.

  6. Recruiting and Retention • Recruiting suitable, representative members. • Minimising loss of members. • If you are not already a member of a PPG, why not join one? • Task: How do we recruit more people, particularly younger people, to join the PPGs and how do we retain members?

  7. Virtual Groups, their Role and Engagement • Is there a place for virtual members (VMs) • Should they be considered as a separate group in the PPG. • How to interact with VMs and confidentiality. • Task:What do we want to achieve with virtual groups and how do we ensure that virtual only members and non-connected members feel themselves to be key to the PPG’s operation?
