  2. New Grade • I will start taking note check grades. • You will staple these to your test when you turn it in. • The first one will count as a Bell Ringer grade since that has hurt so many of you.

  4. I. Landscape • A. Desert covers most of the Arabian Peninsula • B. Water is found in oases which are green areas fed by underground water • C. Early Arabs formed tribes. The leaders were Sheikhs

  6. II. Bedouins • D. Some Arabs were Bedouins. They herded sheep, goats and camels. • E. The Bedouins were nomadic people. They ate mostly fruits and nuts. They rarely ate meat. • Couldn’t eat their animals.

  7. III. Villagers and Trade • F. Some Arabs lived in villages near oases or mountain valleys. Aka near water. • G. In these villages, some of the people traded goods. They would travel great distances across the desert.

  8. H. In order to protect themselves, they traveled in caravans. (a large group of traveling merchants)

  10. IV. Mecca • I. The trade routes in Arabia grew. More towns were set up along trade routes. • J. The largest, most prosperous and most religious was Mecca. • K. In the center of the town was the Kaaba. It was a holy building which pilgrims came to see. Inside of it was a stone that Arabs believed was from heaven. • L. They believed in many gods but their main god was Allah, the creator.

  13. Muhammad's Message • M. In 610, Muhammad, a man born in Mecca, said an angel told him to preach Islam. • N. Islam means to surrender to the word of Allah. • Allah means God. • O. Muhammad told the people not to worship many gods to only worship Allah. • Said all people were equal rich and poor • P. Good people would be rewarded and evil would be punished.

To escape, Muhammad and his followers left Mecca and went to Yathrib in 622. The city then became known as Madinah. (city of the prophet) • D.
