  1. Are We Ready for a Reading Requirement? 2006 Academic Senate Plenary Spring Session San Francisco, CA

  2. Reading as a Graduation Requirement vs. Meeting a Reading Competency Skill rather than discipline • Tool for academic success • Not a content area • Grading Option • Cr/NCr • Standardized instruments can determine competency • Transferability • Skills classes are remedial in nature • Critical Reading as Critical Thinking

  3. Remedial Reading at Riverside City College • Reading Skills I • Five hour per week course • Prerequisite to Reading Skills II • Reading Skills II • Five hour per week course • Prerequisite for Reading Skills III • Reading Skills III • Three hour per week course • Graduation requirement

  4. Reading as a Graduation Requirement at Riverside City College • Students who tested in below college level: (formula, multiple measure) • “C” grade or better in Reading Skills III • Demonstrate reading competency on the Nelson Denny • Matriculation appealed the requirement on the following basis: • Students who had met the GE requirements to graduate were not being allowed to do so • Students who had successful passed English composition were not meeting competency on the Nelson Denny

  5. Reading as a Competency at Riverside City College • Students who test in below college level reading: (assessment score rather than a multiple measure): • Counselors advice: • Take reading • Not to take reading • Should a student receive a grade lower than “C” in any general education class, Reading Skills III is required in order to graduate • Show reading competency on the Nelson Denny

  6. Discussion on the Reading Dilemma at Riverside City College • Reading as a prerequisite for English • Advantages • Most students will be forced to take a class in reading • Academic Success rates will likely increase • Disadvantages • Students will put off both reading and writing • English enrollments may drop • Learning Communities • Advantages • Many students are drawn to learning communities because of the support provided • Students will have a choice to take English without reading as a prerequisite • Disadvantages • Instructors reluctant to teach collaboratively • Part-time faculty may be precluded
