  1. Metric Measurements Portola Middle School 8th Grade Physical Science Mr. Schmidt

  2. Basic Units • Basic Units: • Gram – Mass • Liter – Volume • Meter - Distance Gram Liter Meter

  3. Some Prefixes To convert to a smaller unit, move decimal one space over to the right. Kilo - 1,000 units Basic Units Hecto - 100 units Deka - 10 units Gram Liter Meter Deci - 0.1 units Centi - 0.01 units To convert to a larger unit, move decimal one space over to the left. Milli - 0.001 units

  4. Using the Ladder Method • Prefixes: • Kilo – 1,000 • Hecto – 100 • Deka – 10 • Deci – 0.1 • Centi – 0.01 • Milli -- .001 • Convert Using The Ladder Method 1.) 1 kilometer = meters 2.) 1,000 milligrams = grams 3.) 1 liter = milliliters 4.) 200 centimeters = meters 5.) 500 meters = kilometers

  5. Warm-Up Question • How many centimeters are there in 1 meter? • How many milliliters are there in 1 liter? • How many meters are there in 4 kilometers?

  6. Warm-Up Answer • How many centimeters are there in 1 meter? 1 meter = 100 centimeters

  7. Warm-Up Answer 2. How many milliliters are there in 1 liter? 1,000 milliliters 1 Liter

  8. Warm-Up Answers 3. How many meters are there in 4 kilometers? 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters The question asks for how many meters in 4 kilometers? What do we have to do? 4 x 1,000 meters = 4 kilometers

  9. Metric System KEY VOCABULARY TERMS: 1. Motion – An object is in motion when its distance from another object is increasing. 2. Reference Point – A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

  10. Metric System How Do We Measure Motion? • We use the INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM of UNITS (SI) What is the basic unit used for measuring LENGTH? the METER

  11. Metric System Important Prefixes: • Kilo – One Thousand • Centi – One Hundreth • Milli – One Thousandth For Extra Credit: 1 meter = 1,000 millimeters 1 meter = 100 centimeters 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters 1,000 millimeters = 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters How many centimeters are there in 1 kilometer? 100 centimeters x 1,000 meters = 100,000 centimeters

  12. Metric System What is the basic unit used for measuring Mass? the GRAM Mass is the amount of matter in an object.

  13. Metric System Important Prefixes: • Kilo – One Thousand • Centi – One Hundreth • Milli – One Thousandth For Extra Credit: 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams = ? milligrams How many milligrams are there in 1 kilogram? 1,000 grams x 1,000 milligrams = 1,000,000 milligrams

  14. Metric System What is the basic unit used for measuring Volume? the LITER

  15. Metric System Important Prefixes: • Kilo – One Thousand • Centi – One Hundreth • Milli – One Thousandth For Extra Credit: 1 Liter = 1,000 milliliters How many liters are in 1 kiloliter? 1 Liter x 1,000 = 1 kiloliter

  16. Classwork • The Eiffel Tower is 300 meters tall. How tall is the Eiffel Tower in Centimeters? • What unit of length would you use to measure the distance between Paris and Rome? • What unit of mass would you use to measure the mass of: • a.) Baseball • b.) Person

  17. Homework • Based on your knowledge and reasoning ability please answer the following questions: • What does each unit represent. a.) mm = b.) cm = c.) mL = d.) km = 2. How much does each one equal? a.) 1 m = cm b.) 1 cm = mm c.) 1 L = mL d.) 100 mm = cm 3. Which measurement is the largest. (Circle your answer) a.) 145 m or 145 km b.) 150 cm or 150 m c.) 2 liters or 1,500 mL d.) 2,000 g or 2 kg

  18. Classwork Answers • The Eiffel Tower is 300 meters tall. How tall is the Eiffel Tower in Centimeters? 1 meter = 100 centimeters 300 meters = 30,000 cm • What unit of length would you use to measure the distance between Paris and Rome? • What unit of mass would you use to measure the mass of: • a.) Baseball • b.) Person Kilometers Grams Kilograms

  19. Homework • Based on your knowledge and reasoning ability please answer the following questions: • What does each unit represent. a.) mm = millimeter b.) cm =centimeter c.) mL = milliliter d.) km = kilometer 2. How much does each one equal? a.) 1 m = 100cm b.) 1 cm = 10mm c.) 1 L = 1,000mL d.) 100 mm = 10cm 3. Which measurement is the largest.
