  1. Creating Interactive ActivitiesUsing SoftChalk LessonBuilder Presented by Marie Maness, PhD, mManess@dcccd.edu Professor of Nutrition and Fitness Brookhaven College 3939 Valley View Lane Farmers Branch, TX 75244  URL: http://www.brookhavencollege.edu/ Dallas County Community College District URL: http://www.dcccd.edu/

  2. Presentation Overview: • Reasons for incorporating SoftChalk LessonBuilder (SCLB) lessons into online courses (2 minutes) • Examples of SCLB in two different courses (15-20 minutes) • Introduction to SCLB (3-5 minutes) • Demonstration using SCLB to create a Lesson (10 minutes) • Questions & Answers (5-10 minutes)

  3. 1. Reasons for Incorporating SC Lessons into Online Courses • To help students become active rather than passive learners • To increase retention (hopefully) in online courses • To meet Quality Matters™ Standards for online instruction • see http://qualitymatters.org for details

  4. . . . is a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components. Courses that pass the Peer Review process can use the QM logo in the course as a way to market it. The DCCCD adopted QM Standards in 2006 as the District standard for online course development.

  5. NUTR 1322 passed QM review in July 2007 PHED 1164 passed QM review in December 2007

  6. We'll go to eCampus (http://ecampus.dcccd.edu/ ) to look at how you can use SC to deliver course content including publisher ancillary materials and interactive SC activities: In NUTR 1322: a Chapter Review. In PHED 1164: an interactive SAMPLE Workout Log 2. Examples of SC Activities in Two Online Courses

  7. A Chapter Review. SC is used to integrate ancillary materials from publisher: images, PowerPoint presentations, Chapter Notes, etc.

  8. You can create and insert audio clips.

  9. You can create and insert textpoppers: “Roll over highlighted terms for additional information.”

  10. You can insert a textpopper with an image from the textbook . . .

  11. You can insert flash, QuickTime, or video clips.

  12. You can create and insert interactive self-check activities (no points) or graded activities and send points directly to gradebook.

  13. When a student finishes a graded interactive activity, a pop-up Score box appears with points.

  14. Student presses “Quit Lesson and Submit Score” button to send points to online gradebook.

  15. Chapter Review points appear in the gradebook.

  16. Students were overwhelmed when they saw the SAMPLE Log in my Fitness course!

  17. The interactive SAMPLE Log shows students how to successfully complete a weekly Workout Log - one step at a time.

  18. Instructions direct students to either explore the images on the next 5 pages or view a video (captured with SnagIt).

  19. The SAMPLE Log was clipped in sections (using Adobe Photoshop) to create HotSpot activities with descriptive textpoppers.

  20. On last page, student completes a Matching Quiz to assess knowledge.

  21. If 100% correct, student earns 10 points. When student presses the “Quit Lesson and Submit Score” button, points are sent to gradebook.

  22. SAMPLE Log points appear in the gradebook.

  23. 3. Introduction to SC Lesson Builder If you can use a wordprocessor, you and use SoftChalk software to . . . • create interactive lessons • engage students in learning • package lessons for delivery via LMS or CD • email results to the Instructor or send points directly to the gradebook

  24. Explore the SoftChalk website at http://www.softchalk.com and pay special attention to: • Demos at http://www.softchalk.com/demo.html • Quick Tour Videos at http://www.softchalk.com/lb_demo3.html • Free V4 Trial Download at http://www.softchalk.com/lb_trial.html
