  2. A Few Cultural Notes • Having descendants was a sign of God’s blessing • Children were very important, especially male children because they carry the family name and inheritance. • This was a sign that they would live on forever in history 1

  3. Abraham’s Journey • Terah (Abram’s Father) moves his whole family from Ur to the land of Canaan. • But, they stop when they reach Haran and settle 2

  4. God call’s Abram to move • Abram is 75 years old when he hears the call • Gen 12:1 • Go to the land I will show you • Gen 12:5 • This land is Canaan • The Canaanites where in this land 3

Gen 12:2 - Land and Nation Canaan is the Land Fulfilled in Moses Gen 12:3 - Kingship and a Name He will found a dynasty or kingdom Fulfilled in King David Gen 12:4 - Blessing for allNations The whole world will be saved through him Fulfilled in Jesus Christ Land and Nation Oath sworn in Genesis 15 Kingship and name Oath sworn in Genesis 17 Blessing for all Oath sworn in Genesis 18 God makes three promises 4

  6. Gen 13: Abram and Lot Part • Gen 13:5 • They cannot dwell together • Gen 13:8 • Abram gives Lot the choice of land • Gen 13:10 • Lot chooses the better land near Sodom • Gen 13:12 • Abram stays in Canaan 5

  8. Abram begins to worry • At this point he has no children • Gen 15:2 • What’s the point of blessing if I have no heir • Gen 15:4 • God promises him an heir • His descendants will be as numerous as the stars 6

  9. God Makes a Covenant • Gen 15:7-8 • God promises Abram that he will get Canaan as his land • Abram wants assurance that the land is his • Gen 15:9-18 • God makes a Covenant with Abram • The nature of Oaths 7

God calls a death curse on Himself • Gen 15:9 • Abram cuts the baby cow, baby goat and baby ram in two and waits for God’s next instruction. • Gen 15:17 • smoking brazier (oven) and flaming torch symbolize God’s presence • God passes through the two pieces • God calls the death curse upon himself • What does this foreshadow? 8

  11. God warns of oppression • Gen 15:13 • They will be enslaved and oppressed for 400 years • When does this happen and to whom are they enslaved? 9

  12. 2. Kingship and A Name Genesis 16-17

  13. Sarai and Abram become impatient • After 10 years of living in Canaan Sarai (Abram’s wife) still has not had a child • Sarai is far to old at this point to have children 10

  14. Sarai’s “brilliant” idea“Good one Sarai, Good one!” • Gen 16:2 • Sarai gives Abram her Egyptian maidservant Hagar • Gen 16:4 • Abram sleeps with her and Hagar becomes pregnant • Gen 16:5 • Duh!! Have we not learned our lesson? • Polygamy brings problems 11

  15. Tension in the family • Sarai and Hagar experience tension so Sarai abuses Hagar • Hagar runs away but God sends her back • Hagar is told her son will be named Ishmael which means “God has Heard” • God promises Hagar’s son Ishmael will also be a founder of a nation 12

  17. Gen 17: Abram gets a New Name • Gen 17:1 • God rebukes him for his behavior (taking a concubine) • Gen 17:2 • God reminds him of the covenant he will make with him • Gen 17:5 • God changes his name from Abram to Abraham meaning “Father of a Multitude” 13

  18. The sign of the Covenant • Gen 17:9 - 14 • Circumcision will be the sign of the covenant • The mark of the covenant will be on their flesh • Gen 17:23-27 • Every male among Abraham’s household are circumcised immediately 14

  19. Sarai’s New Name • Gen 17:15 • Sarai’s name becomes Sarah • Gen 17:16 • God promises a son through Sarah • Abraham laughs at this idea. • His name will be Isaac which means “he laughs” 15

  20. Abraham’s visitors • Gen 18:1-15 • Abraham welcomes three visitors into his home • He feeds them and they proclaim news of Sarah’s soon to be son • One of them his God and the other two his angels (may represent the Trinity)

  21. Sarah Laughs • Gen 18:9- • Sarah overhears the promise that next year she will bear a son • She laughs as this since she is advanced in years • Gen 18:14 • “Is anything too marvelous for the Lord to do?”

  22. Sodom and Gomorrah Gen 18:16-19:29

  23. Abraham pleas with God • Remember: Lot (Abraham’s Nephew) chose to go to the rich land of Sodom • God is about to demonstrate to Abraham how he deals with the wicked • Gen 18:20 • God says the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is too grave • He is going to inspect the land to see how serious it is

  24. Abraham pleas with God • Abraham knows that God is about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah but his nephew Lot is living there • Gen 18:32 • If there are at least 10 righteous will you spare the whole city? • Gen 19:1-3 • The two angels reach Lot’s house and he invites them in

  25. The Men of Sodom Attack • Gen 19:4-11 • The men of Sodom attack Lot’s door wanting to rape the visitors he has inside • Lot offers his daughters but they don’t want them • The angel strikes them all blind so Lot can get inside

  26. “We are about to destroy this place…” • Gen 19:12-29 • Lot took his wife and daughters with him • Lot pleas to escape to a city called Zoar • Gen 19:17 • “Flee for your life! Don’t look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off to the hills at once, or you will be swept away”

  27. A Pillar of Salt • Gen 19:26 • Lots wife looks back and she becomes a pillar of salt

  28. Civilization is dead…or is it? • Lot’s daughters begin to believe that their father is the last man on earth • Gen 19:30-35 • They plot to get him drunk and sleep with their father so they can both bear children • Gen 19:36 • Both daughters become pregnant by their father • The result is two more nations that will soon rival the Israelites; the Moabites and the Ammonites

  29. 3. Blessing for All Nations Genesis 21-22

  30. Isaac is born • Gen 21:1-8 • Sarah bears a son and names him Isaac • Abraham is 100 years old when this happens

  31. Sarah Sends Hagar Away • Gen 21:9-13 • Sarah becomes angry at Ishmael and has he and his mother cast out • Wasn’t it her idea in the first place? • More pain as a result of breaking the marriage covenant

  32. Hagar in the wilderness • Gen 21:14-21 • Hagar and Ishmael run out of water in the desert but God provides for them • He promises that he will make of him a great nation separate from Isaac’s

  33. God Tests Abraham • Remember: it is a cultural practice of Ancient Israel to sacrifice their own children to various idols • Remember: God has promised to make of him a great nation through his son Isaac • Gen 22:2 • He is called to offer his only beloved son as a sacrifice to God

God Tests Abraham • A few reminders • Abraham is well over 100 years old • Isaac is a strong young man • Abraham has a record of bargaining with God when He is about to do something drastic (Sodom and Gomorrah) • Abraham doesn’t bargain here, he simply does as he is told • Isaac could have fought back

  35. The Sacrifice of Isaac • Gen 22:6 • He places the wood on Isaac’s shoulders • Gen 22:8 • God himself will provide the sheep • Foreshadows what? • Gen 22:9 • He builds the altar and ties up Isaac • He puts him on the wood of the altar

  36. God spares Isaac • Gen 22:12 • Abraham is told not to kill his son • Gen 22:13 • God provides a ram for him to sacrifice • Unlike the idols Israel worshipped, the God of Abraham would not require human sacrifice!

  37. Isaac is a “type” of Christ (pg 101)

  38. God swears by his own name • Gen 22:15 • “I swear to…myself” • God swears on his own name that he will multiply Abraham’s descendants • Gen 22:18 • “And in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing…”

  39. And they all live happily ever after…. Or do they?

  40. The Nature of an Oath • “Cross my heart; hope to die” • This is a promise inflicting a death curse upon the one making the promise • Basically saying: “If I break the promise, may I die as a result” • How much more serious when God inflicts this kind of Oath on himself Back to Gen 15

  41. Ancient Oaths • Were sealed with animal sacrifice • Animals represented the person swearing the oath • Cut the animal in two and walk between the pieces • This represented calling the fate of the animal on yourself if you break the oath Back to Gen 15
