In 2009, the average per capita spending for Traditional Medicare beneficiaries was $9,702. Notably, the top 10% of spenders incurred an average of $55,763, while the bottom 90% averaged just $4,584. There were a total of 35.4 million Traditional Medicare beneficiaries, resulting in an overall spending of $343 billion. This analysis, conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, excludes Medicare Advantage enrollees and includes both non-institutionalized and institutionalized beneficiaries.
