  2. Two Realities • A) Mary Dempster: • Dunny still slips into his old way of thinking (looking for objective facts) • (235, 236-237) tells her the facts about Paul, destroys the myth that protects her, leaves her in prison

  3. Sniffs the body, no violets • only Chanel

  4. Padre Blazon leads Dunny back to the truth (254) • The Madonna: Dunny doesn’t need the facts anymore; recognizes their marginal importance • He hold the truth: she is mine forever.” (256)

  5. B. Boy and Denyse • Dunny finds himself pushed to the outside • As Fifth Business, he is used to it (241) • But now he is pushed even further (245)

  6. The biography: Denyse wants facts and Dunny can only deal in truth; she wouldn’t accept it

  7. Psychological Realities: • Boy’s atheism • Creates a God in his own image then abolishes him because he is no good (246)

  8. Dunny: • “You created a God in your own image, and when you found out he was no good you abolished him. It’s a quite common form of psychological suicide” (246) • “A dear old friend of mine once told me he wanted a God who would teach him how to grow old. I expect he found what he wanted. You must do the same, or be wretched. Whom the gods hate they keep forever young” (247)

  9. Boy: • “That’s the most lunatic defeatist nonsense I’ve ever heard in my life” (247) • Dunny: “Boy Staunton had reached a point in life where he no longer tried to conceal his naked wish to dominate everybody and was angry and ugly when things went against him” (247)

  10. Dunny’s Loss of Mary Dempster • His guilt (shadow) surfaces again • Mary’s death creates a profound upheaval (249) • “When at last I fell sleep I dreamed frightening dreams, in some of which my mother figured in terrible forms… I was plagued by fantasies of desolation and wretchedness so awful” (249) • (250) Dunny’s prayer “deeply felt” – a psychological necessity

  11. Dunny: • “And then I begged forgiveness for myself because, though I had done what I imagined was my best, I had not been loving enough, or wise enough, or generous enough in my dealings with her” (250)

  12. Dunny’s View of Liesl • (254) his shadow: she tells him to know himself and accept himself • (255) Dunny’s wellness: he has met the devil on his own terms and not lost himself to her
