The Inca Chapter 11 Section 3 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the social, political, and economic change that took place within the Incan Civilization; Including their economic foundations, political organization, technological achievements, and cultural legacies of art and architecture .

  3. Rise of the Inca • 1300’s - Inca are a small community in the mountains of Peru • 1400s - Incan leader Pachacuti conquers much of west coast of South America. The Incan civilization is born.

  4. Political Structure • Incan State was built on war, and all men were required to serve in the Incan army. Over 200,000 troops, which made them the largest and best armed in the region. • Conquered areas were governed by Incan nobles •   Native leaders could stay in place as long as they were loyal to Incas.

  5. Incan Empire • Divided into 4 quarters, each w/ its own governor- containing at 10,000+ people • Slaves were an important feature of the empire they were responsible for building the Incans roads and pyramids • Emperor was believed to have descended from Inti, the sun god .

  6. Social Structures • Highly regimented society, with men and women being required to select marriage partners from within their own social group. • Women were expected to care for children and weave cloth. Only alternative was becoming a priestesses in temples. • Individual groups  difficult to advance from one to another.

  8. Communication • Developed a system of record keeping known as the Quipu Strand of knotted strings that kept track of records. • Developed poetry and plays that were often performed by members of nobility.

  9. Conquest of the Inca • 1531: Spaniards led by Francisco Pizarro landed with 180 men, guns, and diseases. • Emperor died of smallpox. Each of his sons claimed power. • Power struggle weakened the empire. Pizarro took over, Spaniards controlled South America and moved the capital to Lima.
