  3. Student Programs Orange • Short Courses • Sunday, 9am – 1pm • 2 x 4-hour or 4 x 2-hour • Science and engineering tracks • Cater breakfast and/or lunch ? • Tutorials • Tue – Fri, 8:30am – 10am • 4x, 1.5-hour tutorials • Concurrent with sessions + posters

  4. Recent AccelConf Tutorials + Feedback Adapted T. Raubenheimer • PAC’11, NAPAC’13: 4 x 1 hour morning tutorials (8:30am – 9:30am) to introduce topics for new members • Feedback: 1 hour was fine, any longer & talks should be broken up into smaller subjects or include a break • NAPAC’16: 4 x 1.5 hour morning tutorials (8:30am – 10:00am) and 3 x 4-hour parallel short courses on Sunday morning • Feedback: 1.5 hours was fine. “Gives opportunity to present with more detail & historical context. 1 hour is more of a seminar.” – S. Prestemon • IPAC’18: 4 x 1h45 + 4 x 1h serial tutorials Saturday and Sunday • Feedback: Some presenters preferred the shorter time slots / better fit for certain topics. >1.5 hours without break is too much. I would have enjoyed more student interaction during the talks (questions for the audience, short exercises…)

Recent AccelConf Short Courses + Feedback • CARRI ‘18: • Vacuum (3 hrs, 2 parts), Walt van Hemert, Aligent Tech • Ion Beam Analysis (2 hours), Yongqiang Want, LANL • Relevance of Electrostatic Accelerators in Industrial and Research Applications and Recent Developments at NEC (1.5 hours), Eric Alderson, National Electrostatic Corp • Electrostatic Accelerator Basics and Recent Developments at HVE (1.5 hours), NicolaePodaru, High Voltage Engineering Europa • Cyclotrons: Beam Production and Applications (1.5 hours), Brian Roeder, Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M U • Classes parallel with sessions. Irregular format & approaches • CAARI puts high emphasis on applications and intends to continue “class” series with different topics every 2 years.

Short Course Discussion: Sunday 4 hours4 x 2-hours or 2 x 4-hours, Science & Eng Threads • Likely not many show in advance for Sunday • Much work for instructors to prepare 3 hours of lectures for few students • Improve: Recruit local MSU students: ~ 15 possible • Proposal: Use USPAS courses linked to future sessions • Exploit developed USPAS materials: increase quality & reduce prep load • Brief exposure to established topics: Can get more via linked USPAS class • Dual use posting tutorials on USPAS site • Motivate improvements & Increase exposure • If works repeat pattern in future • Improve quality with repetition & build choice library to ease process • Possible minuses? • Less chance for new talent • But USPAS “teams” typically experienced/inexperience (one deliver) • Past IEEE sponsorship: Issue posting materials on USPAS web site? • Organize parallel Science & Engineering threads • Avoid cross compete

Tutorial Discussion: Tue-Fri (4), 1.5 hours each • Concurrent with Sessions + Posters • Choose “orthogonal” topics to minimize draw competition • Choose both Engineering, Physics/Modeling topics • Option 1: Connect tutorials to Plenary Topics • Same speakers / group to give chance for basic fill in elaborating • Different speakers • Option 2: Basic Tutorial Topics • Examples: Dynamics, Beam Sources, SRF Cavities, … • Mostly draw from recent past USPAS courses in similar logic to short courses • Mix Options 1 & 2 ? • Open Questions: • 1 or 1.5 hours? • 8:30am, or is there a better time to not conflict with existing programming. • Could we add an interactive / short exercise component to the tutorials, especially if they are 1.5 hours?

  12. NAPAC 2019 Tutorials: Option 1 • Strong link to content presented at NAPAC: focus on cutting edge research but at a senior undergraduate / early graduate level • Plenary & invited speakers as lecturers

  13. NAPAC 2019 Tutorials: Option 2 • General, introductory tutorials covering fundamentals in key areas • Target intro students: help introduce to field • Topics (choose 1 each) different than overlap MC sessions
