Introduction:Scottish Exchange Visit Between Boston Glasgow • As the pre-med freshman community, we have a great experience coming upon us! • I believe that we are all excited about this exchange; since, we are going to learn different and interesting things about a new culture. This will give us time to get to know each other better through the events. It is a really thrilling time in our lives!

Overview • How can everyone be included in benefitting from our Scottish exchange opportunity? Well, by participating in all of the events that will be happening in Boston, contributing and taking responsibilities. Also to the Ambassadors of the community, by sharing everything with the rest by blogging and using the website. • The arrivals and greeting • Ice-breakers Activity • Events planning • Our visiting Scottish exchange students in the academic and co-curricular life of the community. • Communications

Arrival and Greeting • The two exchange student from Scotland could be picked up and greeted from the airport by two students from our pre-med community. • The two students could have nice posters that could say “ We welcome you from the Pre-med Freshman Success community at UMass Boston”

Arrival and Greeting • Then, they can all take the train so it can give them time to bond and at the same time see something different (the Charlie Card) . • Then these students could have a nice meal in South Station or in downtown Boston before they go back to the Double Tree. • During the meal, it will give the students time to talk and so we can get a sense of how excited they are and what they would like to do. • The students can be picked from the Double Tree by car, if someone from our community volunteers to do so.

Ice-breaker Activity • To introduce the Glasgow students to the Umass Boston students, the community should hold a Movie Night filled with fun activities such as Pictionary. • The movie will, of course be appropriate for the staff and students, but a movie with a light, happy and uplifting mood. It could be rented( from the library) and the location will be determined by the dean or the students could vote for a superb location they know of( Maybe the game room). • Other icebreaker game idea is two truth and one lie .

Visiting Scottish exchange students in the academic and co-curricular life of the community • I think it would be nice if the two different students each day were responsible of showing the college life at UMB to Scottish student. • Thus, the exchange student shadows the American college day, they go through classes, have lunch together and get to know each other better and that way most of the people in our community will be a part of this experience. • Also the Scottish student will have a different schedule every day so they can see a variety of classes and different extra-curricular activities. • It will depend on the student of the day; maybe on Monday the student like to play sports after classes and maybe on Tuesday the student like to go Phi- Delta Epsilon meeting and so on and so forth! • Since, University of Massachusetts Boston is filled with amazing opportunities.

Live Entertainment! • - There are many music venues downtown that always have cheap, good shows • - Paradise Rock Club, The Middle East, and The Royale are just a few! • - Things to consider: What kind of concert what would we bring them to that would appeal to all, Most venues are 18+ as well, and minors will not be able to get in! • - Lots of fun, most shows under 20 dollars • - The Middle East’s website: http://www.mideastclub.com/

Banquet On the Umass Boston Boat in Boston Harbor -Similar to the idea the dean had for us, we could bring them on the Umass Boston boat for a night of fun! -We could get food, music, and dancing ( Since our community is diverse we can have a cultural night with different ethnic food). -This would be a particularly good idea when they first arrive or leave -Possibility of it being semi-formal?

Lunch Downtown at Faneuil Hall • - Only a few stops on the red line from Umass! • - Variety of places to shop and eat, plenty to do. • Logistics: we can all meet in UMass and then take the red line to South Station on a Saturday. • - Historical sights surround it, including John Hancock’s grave • - Faneuil hall’s website: www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com

LET’S HAVE SOME FUN ! • Boston can be pretty expensive, but it has great attractions we can enjoy for $25 or less !

Boston University's Judson B. Coit Observatory hosts public open nights every Wednesday night, weather permitting. Go to the observatory and see the stars up close using the facility's high-tech equipment free of charge. • Free of charge. Wednesdays 7:30 - 8:30(winter).

HOURS AND FARES Fall (After Labor Day) 12 pm to 4 pm Weekdays 10 am to 4 pm Weekends Adults $2.75 Seniors $2.00 The centerpiece and most famous feature of the Public Garden. Operating since 1877, the Swan Boats traverse the gentle lagoon at the garden. The boats originally designed to hold only 8 passengers but as the popularity of the 15-minute boat ride increased, boats were expanded and now carry 20 visitors.

Beacon Hill • A place of history, with its cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks. Beacon Hill shows how rich the culture was and the technology they once had with its street lamps and antique town houses.

The Last Supper(farewell dinner) • On the last day, the community could host a dinner at a nice venue such as the prudential center, where they can have a nice last look of Boston or on a boat, where we could have a dance floor. • The venue could have music playing in the background but for a more personal touch, the freshman success students with special talents could perform(like singing, nothing outrageous). • The final dinner party will be formal and exchange students will be appreciated by giving tokens such as making a portfolio of their memories during the week they were here in Boston.

FOOD!! • Whenever someone is traveling they always want to try new foods, places that have certain specialties, and Boston of course has its popular restaurants. • B-Good is one of Boston local restaurants that is all home grown, the meats, the fries, and the condiments, with prices ranging from $7-$15 so its very affordable. • Fire & Ice another one of Boston’s cool and funky restaurants, with its chefs preparing the food in front of you, its very enjoyable and friendly environment, prices also ranging from $10-$15. • One of personal favorites, Dick’s, a restaurant where you get to be made fun of as you eat, wearing silly hats and the waiters cracking jokes one you, its just a good time, prices ranging from $8-$17.

COMMUNICATIONS • Day after day communications are becoming much easier overseas. • The best ways that our community can communicate with our four lucky ambassadors are Facebook and Skype. They are very easy to use and most of us use them on daily basis. • We can all add each other and exchange ideas or talk about the experience through both of these methods. • The ambassadors can always post status on their Facebook and then we can all comment on what we think. • There is another possibility but the previous suggestions are much more convenient ; Magic jack, it is used to call long distance for free, but first we have to purchase the device for $20. • The four ambassadors should really try to keep the rest of the community as posted as they can by blogging, posting pictures and especially videos, because visuals really help!
