  5. Watergate Break-In • June 17, 1972- 5 men break into the Democratic National Headquarters in Washington D.C. • James McCord is the group’s leader & security coordinator for the Committee to Reelect the President • They planned to- • Photograph documents • Place wiretaps on phones

  6. The Cover-Up Begins • September 1972- The CRP gives $450,000 to the “plumbers” to silence them after their indictment

  7. Watergate in 1972 • During 1972, the scandal generated little interest • Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein • Writers for The Washington Post • Uncovered info that linked several members of the administration to the break-in

  8. Cover-Up Unravels • January 1973- Trial for burglars begins with John Sirica as judge • Sirica believes the men did not act alone

  9. Cover-Up Unravels • March 20, 1973- McCord sends letter to Sirica stating Nixon’s administration was involved • Another plumber, John Dean, reveals that Nixon was involved in a cover-up

  10. “I am not a crook!” • April 30, 1973- Nixon announces that he is NOT involved in a cover-up & appoints a new special prosecutor to investigate

  11. Nixon did what??? • Audio taping system discovered in White House • October 1973- Nixon is taken to court but refuses to hand over the tapes

  12. Got him! • March 1974- a grand jury indicts 7 presidential aides, investigation is closing in on Nixon • July 24, 1974- the Nixon v. United States caserules that he must surrender the tapes • July 27, 1974- a Judiciary Committee approves 7 articles of impeachment

  13. Bye, Bye Richard! • August 5, 1974- Nixon releases the tapes • August 8, 1974- Nixon resigns and Ford becomes president
