Method • Bartlett asked participants to read through a story based on Native American legend twice. • None of the participants knew the aim of experiment • After 15 minutes participants were asked to reproduce the story from memory • Then they went to his lab and they were asked to reproduce the story a few more times

  3. Findings • The story became shorter • The story remained coherent no matter how distorted it was • The story became more conventional

  4. Conclusion ‘Memory is an imaginative reconstruction of experiences, which is exactly what modern research supports.’
