  1. Linkage between the research communityand operational center- case examples - First meeting of the WWRP PDEF working group Karlsruhe, Germany 21-22 May, 2015 KYOUDA Masayuki Numerical Prediction Division, Japan Meteorological Agency

  2. Contents • The terms of reference for our WG • Collaboration between research community and operational service • On high-impact phenomena and its predictability • On-going two examples • Mio’s TIGGE museum @ University of Tsukuba, Japan • Advisory Panel on Extreme Climate Events @ JMA 2

  3. Terms of Reference for PDEF WG a) To advance the science of dynamical meteorology and predictability research, and their application to ensemble forecasting b) To encourage scientific investigations to improve ensemble predictions by better accounting for analysis, model and forecast uncertainties c) To promote research on the evaluation of ensembles d) To foster collaboration between the academic community and operational centres e) To promote the development of ensemble applications and the transition into operations f) To support WWRP projects and field experiments, including Forecast Demonstration Projects and Research and Development Projects g) To promote the use of TIGGE, TIGGE-LAM and other ensemble datasets h) To facilitate and encourage training in the science of predictability, dynamics and ensemble forecasting i) To provide the scientific direction to the development of the TIGGE and TIGGE-LAM archives

  4. Project outcome for operational services 4 Original source : Maeda-san’s presentation of 5th meeting of THORPEX PDP WG

  5. Collaboration between Met. Service and Research Community Research Community Met. Service Win-Win! • Improvement of operational information and services using the advanced research findings • Improvement of skills of staff • Contribution to societies through the information issued by operational services • To catch ongoing high-impact phenomena

  6. 1. TIGGE Museum @ University of Tsukuba • The TIGGE Museum includes exhibits about many different aspects of TIGGE. • Dr. MATSUEDA Mio, the director of the Museum • The beginning of the Museum was a Joint R&D by University of Tsukuba and JMA. • Early warning products for extreme weather events • Developed and displayed through the Museum in collaboration with THORPEX GIFS-TIGGE WG. • Matsueda and Nakazawa (2014, Meteorol. Appl.)

  7. Early warning products for extreme weather events -current stage- In collaboration with JMA, the Met Office has set up a system that acquires ensemble prediction data from four of the leading global NWP centres to generate plots to support warnings of heavy rainfall and strong winds up to 5 days ahead. 8. 2. JMA's Advisory Panel on Extreme Climate Events • JMA established an “Advisory Panel on Extreme Climate Events” in June 2007. • In order to investigate factors of extreme climate events based on the latest knowledge and findings and then provide information based on the investigation to the public as soon as possible when such events occur. • Through Panel-related activities, JMA has enhanced its ability for climate diagnosis and improved its climate services. • Close relationship between experts in research community and JMA staffs through cooperative THORPEX-related activities was important.

  9. Framework between JMA and climate research community related to the Advisory Panel on Extreme Climate Events Original source : Maeda-san’s presentation of 5th meeting of THORPEX PDP WG

  11. Concluding remarks • Early warning products for extreme weather events is going to be provided on real-time basis to improve operational services in WMO Members through the Severe Weather Forecasting Demonstration Project (SWFDP). • The establishment of the framework may enhance linkage between academic and operational services sectors. • The framework activities includes discussion, tool and data sharing.
