  11. WKAR captioning Model as of 3.10.15: 1. For LIVE or nearly LIVE(within 24 hrs) programs we use Dynamic Captions. 2. For SOME programs that we need within 48 hrs we are testing a service called Zencaptions. This service is very accurate and will adjust vertical placement of captions. 3. For programs which are at least one week out we are experimenting with in-house captioning software called MacCaption.

  12. In-House Captioning research Location Small edit suite Hardware for Captioning: Mac Computer Software for Captioning: MacCaption – Telestream QuickTime Word or TextEdit

  13. In-house Captioning research Set up for In-House Captioning: • Spent many months learning MacCaption – no detailed tutorials currently exist. • Experimented with Dragon Speak to transcribe program audio. Limitation – one voice recognition. • Have begun testing Dragon to recognize transcribers voice from a script or audio track. • Currently using transcribers.

  14. WKAR in-house Workflow Steps for in-house captioning 1. Post video or audio only track of program for transcription. 2. Review text doc and format for MacCaption: - accepts a Plain Text doc - Unicode 8. 3. Import video (mp4) into MacCaption. 4. Import text doc into MacCaption. 5. Use Auto Time Stamp (ATS) to roughly set caption timings. 6. Check timings and adjust (labor intense)

  15. WKAR in-house Workflow Steps for in-house captioning (continued) 7. Check the format of text on screen 8. Check and adjust vertical placement. 9. Export as .mcc or .scc for broadcast. 10. Upload file to Omneon / Nexio servers. 11. Air check - pull hair out and grumble a lot. 12. Continue experimenting.

  16. WKAR in-house Workflow Next Steps • Try CaptionMaker (Telestream)on a PC. • Try Dragon Speak with one operator parroting.

  18. Jim Calahan, Post Production Manager KVIE, Sacramento What We use to get it done at kvie

  19. At KVIE it takes a village to CC • We involve everyone from volunteers to the GM • Volunteers transcribe and run prompter during pledge • Interns and PAs transcribe and sometimes use caption software • Anyone who writes a script for a program segment or a pledge pitch is writing a script that will be captioned in some way shape or form from the GM to the field reporter • For this reason we must stress accuracy in scripts limiting things like (Nat pops with no text) or paraphrasing

  20. KVIE Caption SOFTWARE & HARDWARE • CaptionMaker/MacCaption (CPC now Telestream) • Evertz caption encoders for live and tape based • Eznews/Inception (Ross) teleprompter based CC • inQscribe software for transcription • Vantage/Lightspeed (Telestream) for file conversion and converting 608 CC to 708 CC into XDCam .mxf files • AJA fs1 Framesync for tape based up/cross conversion that preserves CC • AJA KiPro recorders for live records that we then use MacCaption to extract captions from files for editing and timing fixes

  21. Outside venders • LNS Captioning, Portland OR for live events and Pledge with guest interviews. • It works better to use someone in your timezone to avoid scheduling issues. • Production Transcripts in Southern CA for transcription services when budget allows.

  22. Testing • I’ve been testing running MacCaption and CaptionMaker on the same MacPro using Parallels and Windows 7 with some success
