  1. JePPIXJoint European Platform for InP-based Photonic Integration of Components and Circuits Coordinator: Fouad Karouta e-mail: f.karouta@tue.nl

  2. JePPIX Mission • To provide Europe with a strategic advantage in Photonic Integration • by joining forces of Europe’s key playersin order to create a solid infrastructure for • Research • Access to Photonic IC design and fabrication • Generic integration technology development • Innovation • Compatibility of academic and industrial processes • Launching startups • Launching foundry • Education • Training in photonic IC design and technology

  3. Photonic integration 3 basic elements Waveguide Phase control Amplitude control  A Integration philosophy Electronic integration 3 basic elements

  4. shallow etch deep etch phase modulator optical amplifier waveguide amplitude modulator wavelength converter curve 2x2 switch ultrafast switch SOA AWG-demux MMI-coupler WDM OXC multiwavelength laser Examples of functionalities

  5. Cascaded WDM laser optical crossconnect multiwavelength laser optical crossconnect tunable multiwavelength laser WDM-TTD switch wavelength converter picosecond pulse laser WDM ring laser Examples of chips

  6. Technical roadmap (1) • What is offered? • Access to University process for Proof of Concept • Access to Industrial process for prototyping and small series • Access to foundry process

  7. Technical roadmap (2) • University process • Nov 2006 two-weeks training in PIC design and fabrication technology • Feb 2007 1st mask design finished • Mar 2007 1st run • Jun 2007 2nd run • Oct 2007 3rd run • 2008 3 runs planned (6 segments each)

  8. Technical roadmap (3) • User input to platform • Statement of interest by partners willing to join a run. • Design of a PIC (interaction with COBRA) • Adjustment of design (if required by COBRA). • Characterisation of designed chip. • Feedback to COBRA. • Platform Output • Verification of delivered designs. • Assembly of all accepted designs + adding test structures and generation of a set of masks. • Order the masks and check of fabricated masks. • Fabrication of the chip. • Sending to each partner its part of the chip for characterisation. • Measuring test structures and report results to users.

  9. Technical roadmap Estimate of turn-around time • m1 mask design • m2-3 fabrication • m4 basic characterisation & delivery Cost structure for user From the real costs (estimated 60 k€ per run) • 20% (12 k€) per run is charged to ePIXnet users (i.e. 2 k€ per chip segment, 6 segments available) • For non-ePIXnet users full cost will be charged (10 k€ per segment)

  10. Academic COBRA Manufacturing Bookham CAD Phoenix Equipment ASML Managerial Roadmap (1) Steering Committee R&D through projects Emphasis on project facilitation Flat organisation Adviser EPIC User Cambridge Project Project Project Coordinator Platform Partner Platform Partner Platform Partner Platform Partner Platform Partner Platform Partner

  11. Managerial roadmap (2) • The steering group of the platform decides about: • new partners upon relevant contribution to technological or knowledge infrastructure. • Accept new user projects: • use of the infrastructure • contribute to the infrastructure • Set-up guidelines for intellectual property handling • Oversee the operation of the platform. • The executive board is responsible for day-to-day management • The role of the coordinator is to report to Steering Group: • propose "components" of the platform (tools for design, modelling and fabrication) • coordinate the decision-making processes about the shared access to the facilities • stimulate and coordinate technology integration between academic and industrial research labs • set-up platform users guidelines and see if their are followed properly • help users with project definition • establish a web-based knowledge structure (http://www.jeppix.eu)

  12. Financial roadmap • Funding Funding through R&D projects + structural support for shared technological infrastructure IndustrialResearch Projects European Research Projects Startups ePIXnet Joint Research Activities National Research projects Trans-National Research projects InP-based Integration Technology Platform

  13. Financial roadmap • Cost structure of the platform • Organisational costs: coordinator and meetings • Consumable costs: epi-structures, masks, processing and characterisation. • Investment: only through R&D projects. • Income structure of the platform for access • Users: pay marginal costs to the platform for activities through ePIXnet and full costs for others charged partially or fully to projects • ePIXnet: coordination costs; participation to processing costs through JRAs. • Income structure of the platform for projects • JePPIX stimulates submission of projects for development of JePPIX technology in national, multi-national and European projects. • In JePPIX-based projects JePPIX partners bring in their own costs according to the rules of the funding program. • JePPIX will become self-supporting in 2008.

  14. Marketing roadmap • Marketing roadmap • JePPIX-symposia • ePIXnet • Conferences • Website

  15. Relevant actors • Partners

  16. Relevant actors • Users • ePIXnet: UPVLC (E), POLITO (I), IMEC (BE), Cambridge (UK) • non-ePIXnet: ENST (FR) • Competitors • None so far.
