  1. “Together in Christ”Sermon #4 Living Sacrifices Romans 12 Page 1763

  2. With Romans 11 We Can Consider Where do I need to be cut off from my old root system? How am I being connected to Jesus, His purposes, and the congregation? What am I doing to be spiritually filled?

  3. With Romans 11 We Can Consider: How do I remain connected to Jesus as the vine? How does God’s love flow through me to others? How am I bearing fruit? Grafts are fragile until they are well set so who do I know that would accept the help to become established and show signs of maturity?

  4. Inhabitation: Christlikeness is not produced by imitation, but by inhabitation.

  5. Romans 12 Page 1763 • “Therefore” relates to the information in the previous chapters. • Move from “Theology” to “Walk-ology”. • Romans 1-11 = 13 Imperatives [Commands] • Romans 12 = 11 Imperatives! • This is a call to action. • Belief should impact behaviour!

  6. The Call to Action • 1. Present Your Body (12:1) • 2. Renew Your Mind (12:2) • And then, depending on how you handle the statements you have 30 statements that can be a call to action!

  7. Romans 12:1-8 Page 1763 • Ro 12:1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual [reasonable] act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

  8. Romans 12:1-8 Page 1763 • Ro 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

  9. Romans 12:1-8 Page 1763 • 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

  10. Action!! • present your bodies as a living sacrifice (v1) • discern what is the will of God (v2) • don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think..think with sober judgment (v3) • use your gifts (v6) • How are you putting these commands into action? What can they look like this week?

  11. Romans 9-13 • Ro 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

  12. Romans 9-13 - Descriptive • 9 Love is unhypocritical: it is people abhorring evil, clinging to the good, 10 affectionate to one another with brotherly love, leading the way in showing honor to one another, 11 not shrunk back in eagerness, boiling over in the Spirit, serving the Lord, 12 rejoicing in hope, enduring suffering, persevering in prayer, 13 sharing their possessions for the needs of the saints, pursuing love between strangers.

  13. Faith in Action… • let love be genuine (v9) • abhor what is evil (v9) • hold fast to good things (v9) • love one another (v10) • outdo one another in showing honor (v10) • do not be slothful in zeal (v11) • be fervent in spirit (v11) • serve the Lord (v11) • rejoice in hope (v12) • be patient in affliction (v12) • be constant in prayer (v12) • contribute to the needs of the saints (v13) • seek to show hospitality (v13)

  14. Romans 12:14-21 • Ro 12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

  15. Romans 12:14-21 • Ro 12:17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20On the contrary: • “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; • if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. • In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” • Ro 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
