Workgroup Progress • Demonstrated viable alternative flats tray • Trayed palletized loads received directly from mailers bypassed normal bundle processing and prep • Multiple mailings and sizes • Most benefit when trays are full • Issues with tray fill level, tray size, pallet makeup… • During testing mailers could not find enough volume to meet the L007 requirements for the containers • Will there be enough mail created within an automated scheme to ever fill the trays?

Workgroup meeting at Muller Martini, 6/24 • Demonstration of new stacking technologies • Allows preparation of larger packages/bundles • 10 to 20 inches • Little change to printers’ production process • In-line sortation, stacking, and strapping • Can lead to reduced USPS handlings • Will require changes to flat presort and preparation rules • Bundle/Stack production complements containerization & USPS prep for flats processing

Next Steps • Summarize key findings, develop recommendations and issue report • Additional work • Evaluation of various presort scenarios to determine the cost/savings impact to mailers and the USPS • Evaluate alternative preparation requirements • Explore technology issues with flats containerization
