FREE STATE ONCOLOGY 3 • Information provided for: Universitas Academic Complex. • For Treatment • 2.1. 1 Accelerator – 5 years old and functional. • 2.2. 1 Accelerator – 13 years old – regular needs repairs. • 2.3. 2 Accelerators that have been decommissioned. No parts available – older than 20 years needs replacement.

  4. FREE STATE ONCOLOGY continue 4 • Simulation • 3.1. Two CT simulators older than 6 years – due for upgrade/replacement (usually happen after 5 years). • 4. Brachytherapy • 4.1. One functioning unit.

  9. GAUTENG ONCOLOGY • Only Charlotte MaxekeJhb Academic Hospital (CMJAH) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) provide Radiation Oncology services in Gauteng. • The one CT scanner at CMJAH has blown a tube and the high cost of repair is not justiable.

  10. 10 • MPUMALANGA ONCOLOGY • Both above hospital renders limited tertiary services due to scarcity of specialists . • Conduct programmes for early detection of cancer and care to diagnosed patients • Services include amongst others: • Radiological breast examination - mammography; • Ultrasonography; • Biopsies;

  11. 11 • MPUMALANGA ONCOLOGY continue • Pap smears; • Colposcopy • Cryotherapy • CT Scan is being conducted as diagnostic measure for cancer. • Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is done as preventive measure for diagnosing cervical cancer. • Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is being conducted to treat abnormal cancer changes of the cervix.

  12. 1. Xray equipment in both Kimberly Hospital and Harry Surtie are working well. relatively new equipment with maintenance contracts. 2. The mammogram for Harry Surtie has been ordered , also have a sonar . Butdont have a person to operate the sonar - looking to train asap (including in-service training for the doctors) 3. Have a Mammogram and a Sonar in good working condition at Kimberly Hospital Complex.4. Most of our equipment are only used for doing a physical work up of a patient before they are sent to Bloemfontein for Radio Therapy.5. Budgeted an amount of R5 million for a business case to set up a Radio Therapy Unit and not to refer to Bloemfontein.6. Received a Grant of R22.24 million awarded by Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation to fight Cancer in the Northern Cape • NORTHERN CAPE ONCOLOGY

  13. 13 • NORTH WEST ONCOLOGY • Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital (KT) services are made of 44 Bedded male/female ward, Radiation and Chemotherapy Unit. Two Oncologists appointed on full time with Physicists. • Medical Oncology • 2.1. Medical oncology services are mainly for adults and include treatment for solid tumors. • 2.2. Some cases of luymphomas are also treated. • 2.3. Other Hematological malignancies like leukemias are referred to Johannesburg. • 2.4. Services of chemotherapy which has dedicated unit is rendered. • 2.5. Paediatric oncology patients are referred to Gauteng..

  14. 14 • NORTH WEST ONCOLOGY continues • 3. Radiation Oncology • 3.1. Has a Linear Accelerator, planning system and planning CT Scan as well as Brachytherapy Service; • 3.2. Provide service to patients needing radiation, except for patients who need advanced surgical oncology services prior to radiation. • 3.3. These patients are referred for surgical oncology in Gauteng. • Medical Equipment • 4.1. radiation oncology equipment are under maintenance contract; • 4.2. Cost of contracts very high – depends on exchange rate. • 4.3. Second bunker available can accommodate second Linear Accelerator.
