  2. The Northfield Community • The 2010 census lists Northfield's population as 6,207. Median household income from 2010-2014 was $72,328, with 12.2% of the families below the poverty level. • For the 2016-2017 school year, 40% of NMHS students wereeligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. • 92.8% of Northfield's residents are white, 2.7% Hispanic, 2.4% mixed race, 1.3% African-American, 1% Asian, and 0.3% Native American.

The Northfield Community • Norwich University, the school district, financial institutions, and a variety of small businesses make up Northfield's employers. • Norwich University is the nation’s oldest private military college and the birthplace of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). • Cabot Hosiery, a Northfield manufacturer since the 19th century; its line of Darn Tough Socks is sold worldwide, as well as to the U.S. military.

Northfield Middle & High School • Northfield Middle & High School is part of the Northfield School District which serves students in grades pre-K through 12. • Northfield High School first opened in 1870 with 331 students. • Current enrollment is approximately 300 students in grades 6-12. • Student-teacher ratio of 9.52 compared to the state average of 10.41. • NMHS has been ranked as one of Vermont's top 10 schools by U.S. News &World Report the past four out of five years.

Learning Expectations Student Expectations—Literacy Competency • The students will: • Analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources to effectively respond through written, verbal, visual and technological means. • Apply mathematical models to reason quantitatively and qualitatively. • Utilize scientific inquiry and the engineering process to solve conventional and innovative problems. Student Expectations—Character and Life Skills • The students will: • Display ethical behavior and awareness of the physical and emotional needs of themselves and others. • Exhibit integrity and independent work habits. • Develop artistic means of self-expression. Student Expectations--Civic • The students will: • Demonstrate involvement in the community and an understanding of the responsibilities of being an engaged citizen. • Demonstrate awareness of global responsibilities to others and the environment.

Flexible Pathways • The Flexible Pathways Initiative, created by Act 77 of 2013, encourages and supports the creativity of school districts as they develop and expand high-quality educational experiences that are an integral part of secondary education in the evolving 21st-century classroom.  • Flexible Pathways provide for: • Dual Enrollment Program • Early College Programs • Work-Based Learning • Virtual/Blended Learning Opportunities • Career and Technical Education • Personalized Learning Plans

Sampling of Current “Flexible” Pathways • Twelve seniors taking their senior year on college campuses as part of the Early College Program. • Twenty-six students are enrolled at regional Career and Technical Centers. • Twenty students are taking online classes through the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC) • An additional 8-10 students are taking one or more college courses through the state’s Dual Enrollment program.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports • Students at Northfield Middle and High School are recognized for achievement in both academic and behavioral areas. • The middle school has won state recognition for its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, being designated as an exemplar school twice in the past few years. • Weekly assemblies recognize middle school students for positive behavior and academic achievement. • Northfield High School recognizes a Marauder of the Week, as well as Marauders of the Quarter for each grade level, chosen by faculty for displaying exemplary Marauder attitude and behavior.

  12. Co-Curricular Activities at NMHS • Northfield Middle & High School offers a variety of co-curricular activities for students to participate. • Each spring our Drama program puts on a musical that is a major event for the entire community. • NMHS offers multiple sports teams each season.
