Assistive Technology By: Kayla Johnson
Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology is a device that is required to help increase or maintain the functional capabilities of a child. This device can be medically prescribed or obtained over the counter. • Assistive Technology is not a device that has been surgically implanted into a child.
Assistive Technology Service • Assistive Technology Service is a service that directly helps the child in the use of their assistive technology. • This may include: training or technical assistance, selecting or fitting the device, and evaluating the child’s need of the device.
According to the law…… • Students have the right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) • Also the right to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) • The law also includes Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
FAPE • Special education course must be provided that include a free and appropriate public education regardless of the severity of the disability. • This education is to be provided at the publics expense and free to the parents. • They must also be inline with the students IEP
LRE • The least restrictive environment requires that students with a disability be educated with students without a disability to the maximum extent allowed. • Students with a disability may only be removed from a general education classroom if they are disruptive to the classroom and are not able to achieve the goals stated in their IEP while in this environment. • Assistive learning devices may be provided to assist with the LRE
IDEA • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that supplementary aids be provided when needed to assist a child in special education. • It also requires the use of aids in general education classrooms so that the students can perform their best in the LRE
Assistive Technology Device for the hearing impaired • An Assistive Learning Device (ALD) is used to amplify the sound that you are wanting to hear. It can be used with a hearing aid. • Augmentative and Alternative Communication Device (AAC) is used to help people with communication disorders express themselves. • Alerting Device- This device can be connected to an alarm, doorbell, or phone to emit a loud sign or blinking light to let someone know that an event is taking place.
Assistive Technology for the seeing impaired • Screen reader- a program that works with a speech synthesizer to aid in giving verbalization of everything on the screen. • Screen Magnification- A software that will zoom in on a particular portion of the screen and enlarge it to fill the screen. • Braille Translation Software- this device will transfer text into its corresponding braille characters. • Augmentative Communication Device- assist in providing speech for those who cannot communicate verbally.
Assistive Technology for The Learning Disabled • Electronic Math Sheets- software that helps students to organize and work through their math problems • Portable word Processor- a device for students who struggle with handwriting. They can use this to type instead. • Talking Calculators- uses a built in speech synthesizer that will read the numbers and symbols that a student presses.
Assistive Technology For The Physically Disabled • Mouth Stick- student can use this to control input they use their mouth. • Eye Tracking- designed for students with limited control of their hands. The students are able to navigate through images by using their eye movements. • Slow Keys- a device that uses a keyboard. The keyboard will not register what is being done until it is held down for a certain amount of time.
