Alien Species • Alien species: aka introduced species, non-native species, exotic species • Species introduced to new parts of the world • Can be invasive species: take over habitat of native species • Outcompetes native species for food or other resources • Native species: species that naturally inhabits an area

  3. Alien species often introduced accidentally i.e. in ballasts of ships • Zebra mussels • Alien species sometimes introduced by humans to control another organism • Mosquito fish

  4. Project – Alien Species • You will research a single alien species located in Canada • Prepare an informative assignment on the organism. (PowerPoint, Windows Movie Maker, Poster, Brochure or magazine article) • Inform others on the impact this organism is having on the ecosystem.

  5. Project – Alien Species • Brief general description of the organism is given • (origin, appearance, size, life span, food sources, natural habitat) • Described how the organism arrived in Canada • Current location of the organism in Canada is given • Described what the Canadian ecosystem looked like before the arrival of the organism • Described what the Canadian ecosystem looked like after the arrival of the organism • Clear explanation of the problems and impact the organism is having on the ecosystem • Clearly explained possible solutions to address the problems caused by the organism • Bibliography • DUE:
